Taking a helicopter tour over New York City is one of the most memorable ways to see the city.
From above, you get incredible views of the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, Central Park, and Manhattanโs iconic skyline.
Having lived in New York City for 30 years, Iโve seen the city from just about every angle, but a helicopter tour offers a completely different perspective.
Whether youโre visiting for the first time or have been to NYC many times, seeing the city from the air is a unique experience.
However, not all NYC helicopter tours are the same. Some feature quick flights over Manhattan, while others include longer routes and more extensive views of the surrounding area.
In this guide, Iโll walk you through 11 NYC helicopter tours, including what makes each one different, what youโll see, and what to consider before booking.

NYC Helicopter Tours at a Glance

How to Choose the Best NYC Helicopter Tour
Before booking an NYC helicopter tour, there are a few things worth considering.
- Flight duration: Short flights are a good option if youโre on a tight schedule, while longer tours give you more time to take in the skyline and surrounding landmarks.
- Departure location: Most Manhattan tours depart from Lower Manhattan, but some tours leave from New Jersey or Westchester. Consider how much time youโll need to get to the heliport.
- Shared vs. private flights: Shared tours are generally more affordable, while private flights offer a more exclusive experience for couples, families, or small groups.
- Doors-on vs. doors-off: Most sightseeing flights have enclosed cabins. Doors-off experiences are available on select tours and can be particularly appealing to photographers.
- Day vs. night: Daytime flights offer clearer views of the cityโs landmarks, while evening flights let you see the skyline illuminated after dark.
Think about which of these factors matters most to you before booking.
A shorter flight may be sufficient if you simply want to see Manhattan from above, whereas a longer or private tour may suit a special occasion.
What to know about the Best NYC Helicopter Tours

Before diving into this post on the best NYC helicopter tours ever, here are a few handy tips that will help you decide which one is perfect for you.
After all, Iโve done a done of top helicopter tours in NYC and donโt want you to make any of the mistakes that I did. Yeah, Iโve made a ton of mistakes. Especially when enjoying the best dinner cruise NYC has to offer.
1. ALWAYS Double-Check the Departure Location
Sadly, you canโt hail your helicopter from the sidewalk. So, many of the top helicopter tours in New York City depart from outside the city.
So, generally speaking, many of the tours listed below depart from Linden Airport/Kearny Point in New Jersey or Westchester County Airport in White Plains.
Therefore, youโll need to factor in the cost and time of traveling to and from these locations, many of which are located upwards of an hour outside the city.
And even though these airports are reachable by train, youโll still need an Uber or Lyft to get to the airport โ and then back to the train station after your ride is over.
However, some of the best NYC helicopter tours do include transfers โ or at least the option to add it on.
Plus, this guide does include some more central options. Yeah, ainโt nobody got time to haul ass to Westchester and pay for train fare on top of it,
Oh, and when youโre traveling outside of the city, always, always, allow additional time in case your train is late or your service is changed in some way.
2. Travel Light
Each tour provider offering up the best NYC helicopter tours around specifically stipulates what is and is not allowed in the helicopter.
Therefore, your booking usually includes access to a secure locker where you can store your bag since itโs not usually allowed with you on the helicopter.
And sometimes, this storage service is complimentary โ or a surcharge may apply.
Generally, though, cell phones are usually permitted (expect to remove the protective case first) but cameras are often banned.
Also, certain handsets (ie, the Samsung Galaxy Note 7) arenโt allowed on helicopters.
3. Dress Warmly and Practically

Once airborne, it can get a little chilly. So, remember to dress in comfy, lightweight clothing thatโll keep you warm and wonโt flap around.
Also, in general, hats and scarves arenโt allowed. And, youโll need to secure long hair with a hair tie.
4. Assigned Seating
Pilots assign seating based on weight, in order to balance the aircraft. Sometimes, this means you arenโt able to sit directly next to your partner.
Also, this means you canโt call shotgun on the co-pilot seat. At the discretion of the pilot, you might be assigned to the rear seats of the craft which have a limited view.
Thankfully though, I was lucky enough to ride shotgun during my flight and it was freaking awesome. I also may or may not have pretended that I was co-piloting the plane.
And while kids under 2 are generally welcome (although, exceptions do apply), they must sit on the lap of a parent or guardian.
Additionally, do be aware that weight limits apply on certain aircraft.
Itโs also worth noting that all of the best NYC helicopter tours listed here are wheelchair accessible unless specified otherwise.
5. Read the small print
Always read over the terms and conditions with a fine-tooth comb. But, pay particular attention to:
- Cancellation/rescheduling policies in case of inclement weather, traffic delays, unforeseen circumstances, etc
- Departure time and meeting time for the pre-flight safety briefing
- Restrictions on age, weight, and height
- Pregnant women are generally permitted in helicopters but companies advise seeking medical approval beforehand
Pro Tip: Remember that heli tours follow the waterways and arenโt permitted to fly over landmarks. Know this and your expectations will be met while enjoying the best New York City helicopter tours of them all.

Seats: 1โ6 people per booking

Operator: Helicopter Flight Services (HeliNY)
If youโve already seen New York City during the day, a nighttime helicopter tour offers a completely different perspective.
This 25-minute flight with HeliNY gives you a chance to see Manhattanโs illuminated skyline, making it a perfect option if youโre looking for cool things to do in NYC at night.
Departing from Linden Airport in New Jersey, the helicopter flies toward Manhattan, passing the Statue of Liberty and the Financial District.
Youโll then see the illuminated neighborhoods of Chelsea, the West Village, and SoHo before continuing north toward Central Park.
Seeing Central Park from above at night is a particularly interesting part of the experience. Youโll also fly past Yankee Stadium before returning to the airport.
Unlike many daytime sightseeing flights, this tour is specifically designed for nighttime views. Itโs worth considering if seeing New Yorkโs skyline after dark is a priority for you.
The tour departs from Linden Airport, so youโll need to arrange your own transportation if you book a shared flight.
There is also an option to upgrade to a private tour, which may include return transfers, depending on the package you select.

5. New York Helicopter Tour: Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Staten Island

Flight duration: 25โ30 minutes
Seats: Minimum 1 person to book
Private/shared: Shared
Operator: Helicopter Flight Services (HeliNY)
If youโre going to splurge on a helicopter tour of New York City, you might as well see as much of the city as possible.
This longer flight with HeliNY does just that, taking you beyond Manhattan to parts of Brooklyn, Staten Island, and even the surrounding countryside.
Of course, youโll still get those iconic views of the Statue of Liberty, the Brooklyn Bridge, and Manhattanโs famous skyscrapers.
But what makes this route particularly interesting is how far it takes you beyond the usual sightseeing circuit.
As you head north, youโll pass the General Grant National Memorial and Columbia University before getting a glimpse of the Palisades.
These dramatic cliffs and wooded slopes are quite a contrast to Manhattanโs seemingly endless skyscrapers.
The flight then heads south, eventually reaching the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, which connects Brooklyn and Staten Island.
Seeing this enormous bridge from above gives you a real sense of its scale, and itโs a landmark you donโt typically get to see on shorter helicopter tours.
Another thing I like about this option is that it departs from Pier 6 in Lower Manhattan.
You wonโt have to schlep out to New Jersey or a distant airport just to get to your helicopter, which can make a big difference when youโre trying to fit a tour into a busy NYC itinerary.
Youโll also have access to complimentary lockers, and professional souvenir photos are available for an additional fee.

6. New York City: Helicopter Tour with NYC: Helicopter Tour with Optional Doors-Off Experience

Flight duration: 16 minutes
Seats: Up to 5 people. No minimum booking requirement
Private/shared: Shared
Operator: Helipass NYC
If youโve ever wondered what it would be like to fly over New York City with nothing between you and the skyline, this doors-off helicopter tour might be just what youโre looking for.
Itโs a very different experience from a traditional sightseeing flight, especially if youโre hoping to capture some memorable photos.
The 16-minute flight takes you over Manhattan, with aerial views of the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, the Brooklyn Bridge, Governors Island, and Battery Park.
Itโs a relatively short tour, but youโll still get to see several of the cityโs most recognizable landmarks.
What really sets this experience apart, of course, is the option to fly with the helicopter doors removed.
Youโll be secured in a safety harness, giving you the opportunity to dangle your feet outside and take unobstructed photos of the city below.
If photography is an important part of your trip, thatโs a pretty appealing feature.
Just remember that flying without doors isnโt exactly a cozy experience. Between the wind and the lower temperatures at altitude, youโll want to dress warmly and tie your hair back.
And if youโre at all nervous about heights, you might prefer the traditional doors-on option.
The helicopter accommodates up to five people, so you can book on your own or travel with friends.
However, keep in mind that youโll need to arrive 75 minutes before departure for the safety briefing and other pre-flight preparations.
The tour departs from Kearny Point in New Jersey too. So, youโll also need to arrange your own transportation to the heliport. Itโs worth factoring that extra journey into your plans before booking.
However, I did this trip a minute ago and thought it was 110% worth it. I just loved hanging out the door and taking photos.
| Pros | Cons |
| One of the few doors-off helicopter tours in NYC, with a license to thrill! | Doors-off upgrades cost extra |
| Unobstructed views are awesome for photography | Departure location in New Jersey requires additional travel |
| While not downtown Manhattan, Kearny Point is closer than Linden and Westchester | No option to fly for longer than 16 minutes |
| Full refund for cancellations up to 24 hours in advance | Early arrival required for pre-flight preparations |
| Small helicopter with a maximum of five passengers | Not suitable for children under five or pregnant passengers, according to the tourโs listed restrictions |

7. New York City: Helicopter Piloting Experience

Flight duration: 30 or 60 minutes
Seats: Up to 2 people per booking
Private/shared: Private
Operator: Wings Air Aviation
If youโve ever looked up at a helicopter flying over New York and wondered what it would be like to pilot one yourself, this experience takes things to a whole different level.
Rather than simply sitting back and admiring the views, youโll actually get the chance to take the controls under the supervision of a professional flight instructor.
Your experience starts with 30 minutes of ground instruction, during which youโll learn about the helicopterโs controls, basic flying techniques, and essential safety procedures.
Then itโs time to climb aboard a Robinson R44 and put what youโve learned into practice.
You can choose between a 30-minute and a 60-minute flight, depending on how much time youโd like to spend in the air.
Although you wonโt fly all the way into Manhattan, you can still catch glimpses of the cityโs impressive skyline in the distance.
Honestly, the chance to pilot a helicopter is what makes this experience stand out. The views are an added bonus, but the real appeal is getting a taste of what itโs like to fly one yourself.
Another interesting feature is that each booking accommodates two people: one person taking the flying lesson and one guest.
So, you can share the experience with a friend or partner, even if only one of you wants to take the controls.
The experience departs from Westchester County Airport in White Plains, which is definitely well outside central Manhattan.
So, youโll need to arrange your own transportation, although round-trip transfers may be available as an additional option.
| Pros | Cons |
| Private experience with space for a guest | More expensive than a standard sightseeing flight |
| Choice of 30- or 60-minute flights | Only one person per booking gets to pilot the helicopter |
| Full refund for cancellations up to 24 hours in advance | Departs from Westchester County Airport, outside Manhattan |
| Opportunity to pilot a helicopter under professional supervision | |
| Optional round-trip transportation may be available |

Departing from Westchester County Airport in White Plains, the tour heads south toward Manhattan, offering aerial views of the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building, Central Park, and Madison Square Garden.
You may also get to circle Yankee Stadium, provided thereโs no game taking place.
Iโd opt for the 45-minute flight if your budget allows. In addition to the Manhattan landmarks, the longer route includes the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, the Financial District, and the Brooklyn Bridge.
Thatโs a hella of a lot of stuff to take in from the air!
Another appealing feature is the choice of departure times. Depending on availability, you can book a morning, afternoon, or evening flight, including a sunset departure if youโd like to see the city in the golden light of dusk.
Youโll be flying in a Robinson R44 helicopter, with the entire experience reserved for you and your companion. You can also arrange transfers if youโd rather not worry about getting to the airport yourself.

Whether youโre planning an anniversary, celebrating a birthday, or even popping the question, this charter offers a very different way to see the city.
One of the biggest advantages is that it departs from Manhattan, usually from the East 34th Street Heliport.
That makes it particularly convenient if youโre staying in Midtown and donโt want to spend extra time traveling to an airport outside the city.
Youโll spend 30 minutes flying over the Hudson and East Rivers, with spectacular views of Central Park, Columbus Circle, Times Square, and the Brooklyn Bridge.
Youโll also get aerial views of Harlem and Liberty Island, along with some of Manhattanโs most recognizable skyscrapers, including the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building, and Rockefeller Center.

If you want to see New York City in style, this private helicopter tour takes the experience a step further by including luxury SUV transportation from your Manhattan address.
Itโs a particularly appealing option if youโd rather skip the hassle of arranging your own transportation to the heliport.
Your driver will pick you up anywhere in Manhattan below 96th Street and take you to Pier 6 in Lower Manhattan, where your helicopter awaits.
Once youโre airborne, youโll enjoy aerial views of some of NYCโs most famous landmarks, including the Statue of Liberty, the Brooklyn Bridge, the Empire State Building, Chelsea Piers, and the Intrepid Air and Space Museum.
You can choose from three flight durations. So, you can easily tailor the experience to your schedule and budget.
Naturally, longer flights give you more time in the air and the opportunity to see more of the city. Yeah, I love staying airborne as long as possible.

Youโll fly in an Airbus H125, with room for up to six passengers. The 30-minute flight takes you over some of Manhattanโs most recognizable landmarks, including the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building, and Central Park.
If you have a little more time and money to spare, Iโd consider the 45-minute option.
The extended route takes you beyond Midtown, offering views of One World Trade Center, the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, and the Brooklyn Bridge.
One of the biggest advantages of this tour is that itโs priced per group rather than per person.
That can make it easier to split the cost among family members or friends, particularly if youโre traveling with a full group.
