I get it, though. Planning a trip here isn’t always easy. Some activities sound amazing but end up being tourist traps.
Others are hard to discover unless you know a local. Should you spend your days chasing waves, swimming with dolphins, or wandering through laid-back neighborhoods?
The options can feel overwhelming, especially if you want a balance between adventure, relaxation and local culture.
That’s where my experience comes in. I’ve visited Puerto Escondido a couple of times, and each trip has revealed everything from the freshest seafood spots to the most breathtaking viewpoints.
I’ve chatted with locals, tested out tours, and figured out what’s actually worth your time (and what you can skip).
If you’re a traveler who craves both authentic experiences and a few can’t-miss highlights, you’re exactly who I had in mind when writing this guide.

1. Dolphin, Turtle, and Whale Watching Tour
One of the most unforgettable experiences in Puerto Escondido is heading out on the Pacific for a dolphin, turtle, or whale watching tour.
Most of these adventures start early with pick up between 6:00 AM and 7:00 AM, when the sea is calm and the animals are most active.
You’ll get picked up from your hotel and then meet your boat at Playa Principal or Playa Puerto Angelito (this is where I departed from) and set off into the open ocean.
These tours generally cost 800 MXN (300 MXN for the turtle tour), depending on the season and operator, making it one of the best-value tours in town.
Just remember that you can only see Humpback Whales in Puerto Escondido from November to March. So, go at any other time and you’ll have to settle for whales or turtles.
The experience itself is magical. Hundreds of dolphins often swim alongside the boat, leaping through the waves and putting on a show that feels almost choreographed.
No joke, we saw dolphins literally LEAP out of the water, and it was super cool.
We also got to see two sea turtles gliding just beneath the surface, which only helped make the tour even more memorable.
All in all, it’s equal parts peaceful and thrilling. Just be sure to bring your camera, sunscreen, and a sense of wonder.
2. Relax at the Beach
Puerto Escondido is blessed with some of the most beautiful beaches on Mexico’s Pacific coast, each with its own personality and charm.
If you’re into surfing, Playa Zicatela is the spot. In fact, it’s world-famous for massive waves that draw in pro surfers from around the globe.
Even if you’re not riding massive swells, the beach is great for people-watching and grabbing a sunset drink at one of the laid-back bars.
For something gentler, Playa Carrizalillo is hidden away at the bottom of a long staircase. Its turquoise waters and calm surf make it ideal for swimming, beginner surf lessons, or just floating the day away.
If you’re craving a more local vibe, head to Playa Puerto Angelito or Playa Manzanillo, two neighboring spots that are perfect for snorkeling and family-friendly swims.
Here you’ll find small seafood restaurants right on the sand. So, you can feast on fresh ceviche after swimming in the water.
For something a bit more off-the-beaten-path, Playa Bacocho is a wide open, wild stretch of sand where you can watch the sunset in peace or take part in their nightly turtle release program.
3. Go Surfing
Surfing in Puerto Escondido is a must-try, whether you’re a total beginner or an experienced wave chaser.
For advanced surfers, Playa Zicatela is the crown jewel.
Known as the “Mexican Pipeline,” it delivers some of the heaviest beach breaks in the world, with waves reaching insane heights during the summer swell season.
It’s not for the faint of heart, but if you’ve got the skill, riding Zicatela should be at the top of your Puerto Escondido bucket list.
If you’re just starting out, don’t worry, because Puerto Escondido has plenty of options for you.
Playa Carrizalillo is one of the best places for beginners, with smaller, more forgiving waves and a sandy bottom that makes learning less intimidating.
Surf schools also line the beach and offer affordable lessons and board rentals. This way, you can get up on your first wave in a safe and supportive environment.
For intermediate surfers, La Punta, located at the far end of Zicatela, is the perfect middle ground.
The long left-hand point break is ideal for practicing turns and building confidence without the massive barrels of the main beach.
Regardless of your experience level, the surf culture here is infectious. So, you’ll find yourself hooked in no time.
4. Do Turtle Rescue at Playa Bacocho
One of the most heartwarming experiences in Puerto Escondido is doing turtle release at Playa Bacocho with Do Turtle Rescue.
Unlike many activities that require booking a tour, this one is refreshingly simple. Just show up on your own and pay around 400 MXN to release a turtle into the ocean.
This usually happens around 5:00 pm, when locals and travelers gather on the beach to help release baby sea turtles into the Pacific, giving these fragile creatures their first chance at life in the ocean.
It’s a moving, unforgettable experience that connects you directly with the area’s natural beauty.
The process is easy. When you arrive, the staff will explain the importance of turtle conservation, give you a turtle in a small bowl, and then you’ll put your turtle on the sand to make its way toward the waves.
It’s a quiet, magical moment as everyone cheers on the little ones while the sun sets over the horizon.
FYI, don’t be surprised if your turtle gets eaten by a seagull. Sadly, this happens a lot even though volunteers stand by and try to keep the birds away.
You also should 100% arrive early (around 4:00 pm), since they can run out of turtles (yes, this happened to me.
You can also call the sanctuary around 12:00 pm to confirm availability, as they sometimes run out for the day.
I also would not book a tour since they are overpriced, and this is an activity that is super easy to do on your own.
5. Hike the Point at La Punta
Hiking the point at La Punta is one of those simple yet rewarding experiences that captures the laid-back spirit of Puerto Escondido.
While La Punta is best known for its surf/bohemian vibe, the rocky outcrop at the far end of the beach offers you an adventure that’s both accessible and fun.
The trail isn’t long or particularly difficult. You’ll just scramble over rocks, follow sandy paths, and weave past tide pools as you make your way to the tip of the point.
Along the way, you’ll often see crabs scurrying across the rocks and pelicans diving for fish in the surf.
The real payoff comes when you reach the top. From here, the views stretch across all of Zicatela Beach to one side and down the rugged Oaxacan coastline on the other.
It’s especially magical at sunset, when the sky lights up in fiery orange and pink hues, with surfers below catching their last waves of the day.
The vibe is relaxed and communal since travelers and locals gather together with drinks/snacks to watch the sunset.
It’s not a long or strenuous hike. But it is super beautiful and is easily one of the best things to do in Puerto Escondido.
6. Grab Breakfast at El Cafecito
Breakfast at El Cafecito is practically a rite of passage while in Puerto Escondido. In fact, this place is SO good that I went three separate times during my last visit.
However, because this local hot spot is always buzzing with energy, you’ll almost definitely find a line out the door, especially in the morning.
Don’t let that scare you off, though. The staff are efficient, the turnover is quick, and before you know it, you’ll be seated with a coffee in hand.
The menu is extensive, offering everything from hearty Mexican breakfasts to fresh pastries and lighter fare.
One of my top recommendations is the chilaquiles. They are perfectly saucy with just the right amount of spice.
If you’re in the mood for something sweet, their pan dulce is baked fresh daily and goes perfectly with a cappuccino or their famous hot chocolate.
Another standout is the omelet with Oaxacan cheese, which is both filling and delicious. Each dish feels homey yet generous, the kind of food that fuels you for a day at the beach or exploring town.
What I loved most about El Cafecito, aside from the food, was the vibe. It’s where travelers, locals, surfers, and families all come together.
The prices are also very reasonable, and you can walk to Playa Carrizalillo after your meal.
7. Visit Mercado Benito Juarez
If you want to experience a more authentic part of Puerto Escondido, Mercado Benito Juárez is a must-visit.
This bustling market is the town’s main hub for locals and travelers alike, and it’s a feast for the senses.
Walking through the narrow aisles, you’re immediately greeted by vibrant displays of fresh produce, colorful textiles, and handmade crafts.
After all, this market isn’t just a place to shop. It’s a place to soak up local culture, watch daily life unfold, and discover flavors and goods you won’t find anywhere else.
Food is the star attraction here. Stalls overflow with tropical fruits like mangos, papayas, and coconuts, while others sell freshly made tortillas, cheeses, and locally caught seafood.
You can also grab breakfast tacos or tamales, sip on freshly pressed juices, and indulge in Oaxacan specialties like mole or tlayudas.
Don’t forget the sweets because the pan dulce and churros are next-level awesome.
Beyond food, Mercado Benito Juárez is also a great place to shop for Mexican souvenirs.
Handmade jewelry, embroidered clothing, woven baskets, and local art are all up for grabs at reasonable prices.
All in all, visiting is an experience in itself since you can wander for hours, tasting, shopping, and chatting with vendors.
8. See Some Cool Street Art
Puerto Escondido isn’t just about beaches and waves. It also has a vibrant street art scene that adds color and character to the town.
Walking through the streets, you’ll find murals and graffiti that reflect the area’s surf culture, Oaxacan heritage, and playful, bohemian spirit.
Many of the works are bold, large-scale pieces that brighten up otherwise ordinary walls, while smaller, intricate pieces hide in alleyways and around corners, just waiting to be discovered.
Some of the best places to see street art include Zicatela, where murals often feature ocean-inspired themes, and the streets around La Punta, which showcase colorful, surf-influenced pieces.
The neighborhood near Mercado Benito Juárez is also a hotspot, with murals depicting local life, wildlife, and cultural motifs.
So, keep your eyes open when walking along side streets and through smaller neighborhoods since some of the most striking pieces are hidden away and hard to find.
9. Explore Mercado Zicatela
Mercado Zicatela is smaller than Mercado Benito Juárez but packed with energy, colors, and local flavor.
It’s a place where locals shop for fresh produce, seafood, and everyday essentials, giving visitors an authentic glimpse into daily life here.
Food is a highlight, though. You’ll find fresh fruits and vegetables, homemade tortillas, local cheeses, and an incredible selection of Oaxacan specialties.
Don’t miss the street food stalls, which serve everything from tacos and tamales to grilled meats and fresh seafood.
It’s the perfect spot to grab a quick, affordable meal or snack while exploring the area. I know I got four GIANT tamales for just 50 MXN and they were AWESOME.
You can also find spices, handmade crafts, souvenirs, and textiles, making it a great place to pick up unique gifts.
Overall, the atmosphere at Mercado Zicatela is lively and colorful, with friendly vendors eager to share their products and stories.
Even if you don’t plan to buy much, wandering through the market is an experience in and of itself.
10. Walk Along the Andador Escénico
A walk along Andador Escénico is one of the best ways to experience the charm of Puerto Escondido.
This scenic pedestrian street stretches along the coast near Zicatela Beach and offers stunning views of the Pacific Ocean and the area’s famous surf breaks.
Whether you’re an early riser wanting to catch sunrise or like strolling in the golden hours of late afternoon, the vibe here is vibrant, relaxed, and super coastal.
As you walk, you’ll find a mix of cafés, restaurants, bars, and boutique shops lining the path, making it the perfect place to grab a coffee, snack, or souvenir while taking in the views.
In fact, local artisans often set up stalls selling handmade jewelry, crafts, and colorful textiles. So, it’s an ideal place to pick up a cool souvenir.
The views along Andador Escénico are also breathtaking. You can watch surfers tackle the waves at Zicatela, spot pelicans gliding above the water, or relax on a bench with a drink in hand.
11. Visit Chacahua National Park
A visit to Chacahua National Park is one of the most unforgettable experiences you can have while staying in Puerto Escondido.
Generally, it will take you around three hours to get there via public transportation.
That’s mainly because this remote paradise is a maze of lagoons, mangroves, and untouched beaches that feel worlds away from Puerto Escondido.
Because of the journey, it’s worth planning an overnight stay to enjoy everything the park has to offer.
Once you arrive, you’ll find endless opportunities to connect with nature. Take a boat ride through the mangroves and spot crocodiles, tropical birds, and iguanas basking in the sun.
The lagoons are also perfect for kayaking or paddleboarding, and at night, you can witness the magical glow of bioluminescent plankton lighting up the water.
For those who love the beach, Chacahua features wide, uncrowded stretches of sand that are ideal for swimming, surfing, or relaxing in a hammock with a fresh coconut.
Beyond its natural beauty, Chacahua is home to small Afro-Mexican fishing communities where you can enjoy freshly caught seafood and learn about local culture.
You absolutely can book a day tour here if you are short on time, but an overnight stay is 100% worthwhile.
12. Catch the Sunset at Mirador Las Tortugas
Catching the sunset at Mirador Las Tortugas is one of those experiences that you’ll remember long after your trip ends.
Perched on a rocky bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean, this viewpoint offers sweeping, unobstructed views of the ocean.
As the sun begins to sink, the sky explodes with pink, orange, and golden hues, casting a magical glow over the waves below.
The atmosphere at Mirador Las Tortugas is relaxed and communal. So, don’t be surprised if you find other travelers and locals here.
It’s the kind of place where time slows down, and you can just sit, breathe, and take in the beauty of Oaxaca’s coastline.
Bring a drink or some snacks, find a comfortable spot on the rocks, and let the sound of the crashing waves put your mind at ease.
What makes this spot even more special is the fact that you might see sea turtles swimming in the waters below, adding an extra layer of awesome to the experience.
I came here with my friends, and rather than climbing down to the rocks below, we headed to the access point for Playa Coral. We got a drink and enjoyed the lovely on-site bar.
13. Go Snorkelling at Playa Carrizalillo
Playa Carrizalillo is one of the most beautiful beaches in Puerto Escondido. It’s also the perfect spot for snorkeling.
Tucked away in a small, horseshoe-shaped cove that is accessible via a long staircase, the beach is sheltered from strong waves.
The result is calm, crystal-clear waters that are great for seeing marine life.
So, slip on your mask and fins, and get ready to spot colorful tropical fish darting among the rocks and coral near the edges of the bay.
It’s a great place for beginners since the waters are gentle. However, experienced snorkelers will also love the variety of sea life that calls this little cove home.
After snorkeling, you can relax on the soft golden sand or grab a refreshing drink from one of the beachside palapas.
Because of its beauty and accessibility, Playa Carrizalillo is VERY popular. So, it’s best to arrive earlier in the day to secure a good spot on the beach.
14. Take a Day Trip to Mazunte
A day trip to Mazunte from Puerto Escondido is an easy and rewarding way to experience the laid-back charm of Oaxaca’s Pacific coast.
Located about two hours away by colectivo or bus, the journey takes you along scenic coastal roads lined with palm trees and small fishing villages, making the ride part of the adventure.
Early morning departures are best to maximize your time in Mazunte since it will take you a minute to get there.
Also, always ask about when the final collectivo is BACK to Puerto Escondido so that you don’t get stuck.
Once you arrive, you can relax on soft sandy beaches, swim in calm waters, or simply watch the waves roll in.
A visit to the Mexican Turtle Center is also a must since this conservation project educates visitors about local sea turtles and allows you to see baby turtles that wll be released into the ocean.
Mazunte also has a thriving artisan scene, with a wealth of small shops selling handmade jewelry, textiles, and natural soaps.
For a unique experience, check out the Centro de Estudios y Terapias Alternativas, a peaceful space with wellness workshops, yoga, and meditation.
End your day by watching the sunset from the beach or a cliffside viewpoint, and enjoy fresh seafood at one of the town’s cozy restaurants.
Expert Tip: Please note that there is no direct collectivo from Puerto Escondido to Mazunte. You have to take a bus to San Antonio and then a collectivo from San Antonio to Mazunte.

One standout experience is with Puerto Mezcal Tours, led by Antoine and Arely, a passionate couple dedicated to sharing the art of mezcal making.
Their tours operate on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays at 3:30 PM, lasting approximately 2.5 hours.
The journey begins with a comfortable, air-conditioned ride to an ancestral distillery just outside of Puerto Escondido.
Here, you’ll witness traditional mezcal production, including the roasting of agave hearts in earthen pits and the use of copper stills.
The tour culminates in a guided tasting of five rare mezcals, each showcasing unique flavors and aromas.
Antoine and Arely provide awesome commentary and are super enthusiastic. In fact, their passion only enhances the tasting experience.
16. Watch Sufers Ride the Waves
Puerto Escondido is world-famous for its powerful waves, and one of the best things to do is watch the surfers in action.
Known as the “Mexican Pipeline,” Playa Zicatela is at the heart of the surf scene.
With massive, barreling waves that attract professional surfers from all over the world, this beach is where you’ll see the most jaw-dropping performances.
The best time to catch the action is in the morning or late afternoon when conditions are ideal and the light is perfect.
If you’re looking for more laid-back vibes, head to La Punta at the southern end of Zicatela.
Here, the waves are smaller and more beginner-friendly. So, you’ll see a mix of locals and travelers learning to surf.
There are also lots of beachside cafés and bars here. So, you can sip a drink while watching surfers glide across the waves.
For families or those who prefer calm waters, Playa Carrizalillo is another great spot.
While the waves are much gentler, it’s a popular beach for beginners. So, you’ll still see plenty of surfboards in the water.
17. Go Kayaking and Bird Watching at Manialtepec Lagoon
Just 20 minutes outside of Puerto Escondido is Manialtepec Lagoon. It is a vast and biodiverse ecosystem that’s perfect for a day of kayaking and bird watching.
Surrounded by mangroves and fed by both freshwater and saltwater, the lagoon is home to a variety of wildlife.
Early morning is the best time to go since this is when the water is calm, the light is soft, and hundreds of birds are most active.
As you paddle through the narrow channels, you may spot herons, egrets, kingfishers, and even a roseate spoonbill with vibrant pink plumage.
Kayaking here is a peaceful way to explore areas larger boats can’t reach. Gliding quietly through the mangroves also allows you to get an up-close view of this delicate habitat.
Who knows, you might even get lucky and see some iguanas or crocodiles basking in the sun.
For bird lovers, the lagoon is a paradise, especially during migration season when species from North America stop here on their journey south.
FYI, migration season is usually from November to April. So, visit at this time of year if you love birds.

This spot is just a short drive away from town, and, at night, this peaceful spot comes alive with glowing plankton that sparkle as you move through the water.
