This super enchanting tearoom on the Upper West Side has an Alice and Wonderland theme about it that both the big and little kids love.

In fact, people adore this place so much that there are now three different locations scattered throughout the city.

Truth be told though, the Upper West Side location (aka the original) is still my fave since it features vibrantly painted walls, mismatched tea sets, and stunning Alice and Wonderland decor around every turn.

Incredible decorative highlights include vibrant floral wallpaper, Middle-eastern patterned china, patterned pillows, and red velvet seats.

However, the only thing more impressive than the decor is the tea service – an incredible New York afternoon tea experience that includes a wide selection of premium teas (the hot cinnamon spice and spiced plum were my faves).

Then, once you have your tea in hand, devour reimagined takes on classic afternoon tea offerings like miniature pastries, English raisin scones (with double cream + strawberry preserves), and savories like Hudson Valley Fois Gras Torchon.

The Pierre is a 5-star, Taj Hotel that is known for serving the best New York afternoon tea of them all.

Therefore, if you’re looking to get extra fancy and refined while in the big apple, then The Pierre is THE place to be.

I mean, it’s straight-up historic since it was first opened in 1930 and overlooks none other than Central Park itself.

However, the real magic happens once you step inside their refined tea room and indulge in an experience that Town and Country fondly refers to as the “best afternoon tea in New York City.”

And, if it’s good enough for them then it’s good enough for me.

So, start by choosing from among several loose leaf teas from Palais des Thes. Although not gonna lie, the signature Pierre Blend (cardamom, orange, ginger, cinnamon, etc.) is my personal fave.

Then, swan dive into a selection of tea sandwiches that include mini lobster rolls, spiced chicken tartlets, and deviled eggs on brioche, among other things.

Finally, when you’re ready for the sweetness, indulge in some fresh cranberry scones (with Devonshire cream, lemon curd, and raspberry preserves), followed by an array of pastries like coffee opera cake, flavored macarons, and strawberry lemon pavlovas.

6. The Palm Court at the Plaza Hotel

The Palm Court at the Plaza Hotel

Possibly the most famous entry on this list of top picks for the best afternoon tea in NYC, the Palm Court has a reputation for excellence and can be conveniently found on Fifth Avenue, overlooking Central Park.

Now, is it my favorite New York afternoon tea on this list? No, probably not. I personally think it’s expensive and a bit overrated.

But, afternoon tea at the Plaza is an iconic New York experience that many people don’t want to miss out on since they’ve been serving tea here for well over 100 years.

So, channel your inner Eloise and make a reservation inside the Palm Court.

It basically feels like you’re dining inside the most ornate greenhouse that you ever did see since the large, open glass-ceilinged restaurant features ornate marble columns and is filled with tons of giant potted plants.

You’ll also love their wide selection of loose leaf teas, including my fave the Chai Imperial, which are perfectly complemented by savory items like pastrami cured salmon with horseradish on pumpernickel and a foie gras terrine on brioche toast.

Next, swan dive into homemade scones (served with Devonshire cream, yuzu/lemon curd, and fresh preserves) that are followed up with passion fruit macarons, lychee/rose coconut cake, and Bailey’s infused, dark chocolate Buche.

Yup, afternoon tea decadence to the extreme people.

Pro Tip: Make reservations WELL in advance and be aware of their smart casual dress code. Translation? Don’t show up in that ratty pair of sweatpants that you roam around the house in. They also serve a fun. Eloise-inspired afternoon tea for kids.

And the Whitby Hotel is no exception. But guess what? That’s not really a bad thing since they do classic, uber-chic dining really well.

So, once you take a seat in their vibrant, equal parts modern and trendy dining room, be prepared to sample a healthy afternoon tea that features all the classics (so you’ll still get your tea sandwiches, scones, and desserts) but with a series of simple changes that make the entire experience a wee bit lighter.

Therefore, think whipped cream instead of clotted cream. So, yeah, the changes are subtle.

So, why not channel your inner Holly Golightly and enjoy the best afternoon tea in NYC at the Blue Box Cafe.

Because as the name suggests, this eatery is owned and operated by Tiffany and Co.

As such, it provides diners with a rich and extravagant afternoon tea amidst a sea of marble walls and turquoise dishes, chairs, and walls – a shade that is the same color as the company’s signature gift boxes.

And then there’s the tea service itself, which includes ultra snazzy things like almond cakes designed to look like Tiffany gift boxes, glitter-dusted clotted cream, and so-called “robin’s eggs” that are perfectly presented to you inside a nest made of phyllo dough.

Honestly, the food is just OKAY since you’re really just here for the experience.

So, have your camera at the ready and take lots of photos before swam diving into a very Parisian afternoon tea that features a green salad, a selection of tea sandwiches served on fresh brioche or flaky croissants (like Croque monsieur, chicken salad and watercress, and egg salad), and French macarons/pastries for dessert (apple tart, chocolate eclair, etc.).
