1. Austin Street Brewery

Co-founded by two friends who started with just one keg of brewed beer between them, Austin Street Brewery opened its doors in 2014 and has been growing ever since.

Because since then, the two co-owners have never given away any part of their business, which means that they have full creative control over what they produce.

And trust me, it’s a lot!

I mean, Austin Street Brewery produces pale ale, double IPA, milk stout, \ fruit beer on draft,  dark wild ale, German pilsner, and even Kölsch by the bottle or can – easily making it one of the best breweries in Portland Maine.

Because the name of the game here is beer (duh!), so just pick up a frosty cold one, grab a spot on their outdoor terrace, and chill like a total boss!

Just do yourself a favor and do NOT stop by on an empty stomach.

Yeah, the best you’ll get out of the brewery is a 2oz bag of potato chips (a beer’s best friend – apart from you of course!).

However, Austin Street Brewery does work with many local food truck businesses and even has a rolling calendar that details what type of food will probably be available each day.

So, make sure you check their website beforehand so that you’re not met with disappointment since some days = no food trucks (not-so-quietly sobs in the corner).

Sign in front of Allagash Brewing Company

When one man manages to weld the incredible power of his very own brewing system, you know he’s a super savvy expert about all things brew!

And, luckily for you, that’s exactly how Allagash Brewing Company was born, way back in ye olde 1995.

Now, fast forward a few years later and they were already winning top awards and became the proud recipient of the World Beer Cup.

Yup, not bad at all and just another day’s work for one of the best breweries in Portland Maine.

Plus, the vibe at Allagash Brewing Company is really positive. I mean, they’re passionate about beer, and, accordingly,, want to keep their hard-earned rep as one of the best breweries in Portland Maine.

However, they also have a strong interest in sustainability, and in giving back to the community that helped them become the business that they are today.

Additionally, this brewery specializes in Belgian-style beers. So, you’ve got plenty of wheat-based ale to choose from every time you visit.

There’s also stout, golden ale, sparkling ale, and pilsner on tap here, as well as a range of Coolship beers, which use the traditional Belgian brewing method of “spontaneous fermentation”, which is hopefully not as dangerous as it sounds!

FYI, Allagash also has a solid partnership with Bite Into Maine, a food truck service that specializes in Maine-centric foods.

So, while you’re here, you can deffo enjoy local delicacies like lobster, pretzels, burgers, whoopee pies, or a good ol’ grilled cheese.

But whatever you decide to eat, make sure to try out a cool glass of Allagash White – Allagash Brewery’s first and signature beer!

In fact, there’s so much variety here that they actually serve a large selection of beverages for non-beer drinkers too!

So, feel free to rock out and indulge in their premium assortment of wines, seltzers, hard ciders, and various non-alcoholic drinks too.

Price: Beers start at around $6.00 each. Try their Camp Beer, a clean and crispy brew that pairs perfectly with a nice open campfire.

4. Foundation Brewing Company

For some, brewing is a hobby. For others, it’s life’s true purpose. And that’s basically what led Foundation Brewing Company’s four founders to take the leap from enthusiastic home-brewers to full-on, mass-producing beer entrepreneurs.

But, once they finally got their business firmly off the ground, they made sure to put their main focus into making their company better, not bigger.

Therefore, it’s easy to see why this is one of the best breweries in Portland Maine. After all, there’s some serious passion in Foundation’s beers.

And a visit to their tasting room will help you get to know them better – and find your favorite new beer in the process.

Who knows, perhaps a Burnside brown ale is to your taste? Or, how about a smooth Citrabot Triple IPA? Or, maybe a cool can of Cosmic Bloom?

However, things get even more delicious with Foundation’s bottled beer selection since their brews are aged in former spirit barrels that were used to store either scotch or bourbon.

You know, to create a little extra flavor before mixing the beer with slightly sweeter delights like caramel, chocolate truffle, and coconut/honey-glazed pear. So yeah, it’s like dinner and dessert, all in one!

Speaking of food, “is there anything to eat?” you might rightly wonder.

Well, Foundation has a rolling calendar filled with different food trucks that make guest appearances at the brewery throughout the year.

Although, their main partner in foodie crime happens to be the colorfully named Muthah Truckah – a food truck that provides voracious visitors with a delicious selection of toasted sandwiches that are available most weekends.

However, other vendors do stop by during the week, like Cheese the Day. Yup, gotta love these names!

Address: 1 Industrial Way UNIT 5, Portland, ME 04103

Hours: Open Sunday and Monday from 12:00 pm to 6:00 pm, and Wednesday through Saturday from 12:00 pm to 7:00 pm.

Price: Beers start at around $5.00 each (Get the S’more Love which ia a milk stout with notes of marshmallow, cocoa, graham crackers, and vanilla)

5. Battery Steele Brewing

Beer from Battery Steele Brwery

From humble beginnings in an old barn to running their own brewery, Battery Steele Brewing has been making a name for themselves among the best beer breweries in Portland Maine for a while now.

In fact, you’ll find them tucked away on Industrial Way, near the Riverton area, just like many of the other businesses on this list.

They’ll be there, happily working away in their microbrewery, producing iconic beer varieties like Flume, Golden Path, and Abstract Object (that’s double IPA, pilsner, and milk stout to you and me).

So, this is where you go for a quiet, chill drink on a hot summer afternoon. Just grab your beverage of choice, park yourself down at a bench outside in the shade, and kick back.

Or, if you prefer, sit in the bar area and relax among the brewing equipment. This way, you can get a real feel for just how much work it takes for Battery Steele to brew the beer that you’re happily sipping on. It’s like the circle of life for beers, y’all!

And while Battery Steele doesn’t serve food themselves, Industrial Way usually has an assortment of different food trucks hanging around the area.

So, you definitely should be able to grab a quick bite to eat if you find yourself quickly becoming one hangry AF beast.

Address: 1 Industrial Way UNIT 12, Portland, ME 04103

Hours: Open Monday through Thursday from 12:00 pm to 7:00 pm, Friday from 12:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Saturday from 11:00 am to 8:00 pm, and Sunday from 11:00 pm to 7:00 pm.

Price: Beers start at around $5 each (Try the Flume Double India Pale Ale)

6. Bissell Brothers Brewing Company

Lime green Bissell Brothers Brewing Company delivery truck.

This brewery operates out of a 100-year-old former rail car repair building. I mean, come on. It’s the obvious choice for a brewery, amirite?

But seriously, the brothers Bissell have made a big success out of their brewing venture. They’ve even opened up a second production facility in their rural hometown community!

But don’t worry – they’ve got all their best beers available for you to try right here in Portland. So, feel free to sample some of their single and double IPAs like Exponent, Nothing Gold, or The Substance Ale.

What, after some barrel-aged stout? Then look no further than the brothers’ Sigil series. You’ve also got pilsner, Kellerbier, and even Czech-style dark lager in the form of One Little Stone.

And to continue with their entrepreneurial streak, the Bissell brothers also opened their own on-site kitchen! Here you can grab burgers, salads, tacos, ceviche, and more. Just order at the bar, and pick up at the window. Yup, easy peasy!

Be aware though that Bissell Brothers Kitchen only operates from Thursday through to Sunday. So, any other day of the week, definitely bring your own snacks to avoid the hunger within.

Trust me, you don’t want to be at one of the best breweries in Portland Maine, and stuck with beer, beer, everywhere, but not a bite to eat (Get it?)!

Address: 38 Resurgam Pl, Portland, ME 04102

Hours: Open Monday through Saturday from 11:00 am to 9:00 pm and Sunday from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Price: Around $7 per beer (Try The Substance Ale)

7. Oxbow Blending and Bottling

Bartender serving up beer at Randolph Beer.

Nestled in East Bayside you’ll find Oxbow Blending and Bottling.

Originally a farmhouse brewery up in rural Newcastle, Oxbow Brewery gets its name from the bends and turns that the river Dyer takes there, as it flows through the town.

But, once they started gaining ground in the brewing business, they expanded and opened up the Oxbow Blending and Bottling facility further south in good old Portland.

Chill is the main vibe here, in addition to having all the delicious beers you could ever want, including lager and ale on tap, in addition to lots of fruity-flavored beer in bottles.

There’s also a huge amount of space here that has been dedicated to visitors, as well as a central portion of the building that serves as the bar (as it should be!).

However, there’s also a large event space, and Gallery 49 art gallery onsite, for a touch of extra sophistication. Yes, hand me my pale ale, Jeeves!

Additionally, Oxbow Blending and Bottling plays host to a wide variety of community events, including everything from fly tying hosted by the local tackle shop to live hip-hop nights with live music from artists both established and underground.

Yessiree, you never know what you might find at one of the best breweries in Portland Maine, but it’s sure to be a good time!

Pro Tip: Stop by Duck Fat right next door and get some delicious fries while you’re here.

Address: 49 Washington Ave, Portland, ME 04101

Hours: Open Sunday through Wednesday from 12:00 pm to 9:00 pm, Thursday from 12:00 pm to 11:00 pm, and Friday and Saturday from 12:00 pm to 12:00 am.

Price: Beers start at around $5.00 each.

8. Urban Farm Fermentory & Fruit Brewing Company

The bright green exterior of Urban Farm Fermentory in Portland Maine.

As the name might suggest, Urban Farm Fermentory is all about getting back to basics. Their focus is on using local ingredients, sometimes even foraged, to make their many alcoholic beverages.

Then, through their gruit brewing techniques, Urban Farm Fermentory is able to utilize all sorts of things such as herbs, roots, vegetables, flowers, and leaves to make their distinctive flavored beers.

And not just all beer either! They also create cider, mead, kombucha, and jun, just to name a few. This leads to drinks with flavors such as red beet, turmeric, ghost chili pepper (for the truly daring!), rose petal, and even seaweed.

Seriously, their tasting room is like taking your tastebuds on a tropical safari, but for alcohol!

And because of their love of foraging, Urban Farm Fermentory’s products really embody the essence of the local Portland area.

Add to that their hands-on approach to brewing techniques (especially the kombucha – did you know it kinda starts out as a big barrel of tea?) and you’ve got a real grassroots grounded operation that’s one of the best breweries in Portland Maine.

Just make sure you bring a snack as there isn’t an eatery on site, although they do offer small snacks like waffles. And if you fancy yourself a nature-lover, you can even arrange to go foraging with them if you’d like!

Yup, I’ve raved about these guys before – check out my list of the best things to do in Portland Maine!

Address: 200 Anderson St, Portland, ME 04101

Hours: Open Sunday through Wednesday from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm, Thursday from 12:00 pm to 6:00 pm, and Friday and Saturday from 11:00 am to 8:00 pm.

Price: Beers start at around $6.00 each (Try the Habanero Imperial Stout if you’re feeling extra adventurous).

9. Foulmouthed Brewing

Beer from Foulmouthed Brewing

No list of best breweries in Portland Maine could ever be complete without mentioning Foulmouthed Brewing.

I mean, you want a beer? Well, here it is. You hungry AF? Great because Foulmouthed has got that covered too.

So, make yourself at home and enjoy a punchy, friendly vibe that is perfectly complemented by their super original twist on both their beer and food menus.

A spin that is pretty appropriate for a former auto garage turned microbrewery. Because their goal here is to “carefully break the rules of brewing”, which certainly fits in with their style, aka no-nonsense, yo!

And the feel is the same at the bar, where you’ll get IPA, sour ale, brown ale, and American blonde ale on tap. In cans though, you’ll find lager, German-style wheat beer, citrus beer, and English Special bitter – with bottles available as well.

Plus, from the kitchen, you can order plenty of finger foods, including old favorites like wings, nachos, crab cakes, and battered fish, as well as several different styles of burgers, salads, fried chicken, roast beef sandos, and more.

There’s also a kids menu that features mac & cheese, chicken bites, and more burgers, which – though it might not sound it from the name – makes Foulmouthed Brewing an ideal place for a family pit stop during your visit to Portland.

Just make sure the kids don’t accidentally learn any words you don’t want them to repeat in the company of grandma and grandpa!

Address: 15 Ocean St, South Portland, ME 04106

Hours: Open Thursday and Friday from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm and Saturday and Sunday from 12:00 pm to 8:00 pm.

Price: Beers start at $7 each (Get the Local Beer which is an American blonde ale)

10. Sebago Brewing Company

A flight of beers from Sebago Brewing Co.

Sebago Brewing Company has been in business since the late ’90s. And their success can be seen in each of their five locations throughout Maine.

But, it’s in their Portland Brewpub that you can find some of their best beers, best food, and one of the best and friendliest atmospheres of any Portland brewery, IMO.

Because you’ve really got it all here at one of the best breweries in Portland Maine. I mean, they’ve got IPA, barleywine, Bavarian-style wheat ale, American Amber Ale, cranberry sour ale, and more.

And If happen to be visiting during the festive season, then be sure to pick yourself up a delicious, Slick Nick long winter ale.

Although, If you’re in Maine in the fall, then perhaps a glass of NED IPA, with its piney and spicey hop aromas, will wet your whistle. There’s also a wide selection of wines and cocktails available too if you fancy something sweeter to finish with dessert.

Speaking of food, Sebago Brewpub has an extensive food menu, with burgers, sandwiches, bowls, starters and salads, sides and – very appropriately – pub favorites.

That’s why, with everything that’s available, you’re guaranteed to have a good time, which goes right along with Sebago’s ethos since they pride themselves in knowing how to have a good time. And, y’all, they really do!

Address: 211 Fore Street, Portland, ME 04101

Hours: Open Tuesday through Thursday from 11:00 am to 11:00 pm and Friday and Saturday from 11:00 am to 12:00 am.

Price: Beers start at $7 each (Try Bog So Hard, a sour beer with cranberry notes)

11. Liquid Riot Bottling Company

Flight of four beers

The co-founding brothers of Liquid Riot have been busy. Like, SUPER busy. Because between the two of them, they’ve managed to brew, and serve, well over 300 different beers since the company started.

They’ve also won a bunch of different awards, including a gold at the World Beer Cup for their barrel-aged pilsner Blushing Star. Yup, not bad for a small family business says I!

But they haven’t done it all on their own. Because of Liquid Riot’s work ethic is communal collaboration, or, working with others and sharing ideas in order to be as creative as humanly possible.

And with 300+ beers in their repertoire -including lagers, pale ales, IPAs, fruit-based wheat ales,  and milk stouts (FYI, that’s just on draft) – I’d say it’s working!

They don’t just make beer either – alongside their award-winning brews there are also plenty of spirits like bourbon, single malt and rye whiskeys, two different rums, and even vodka. Yup,  No wonder this is one of the best breweries in Portland Maine!

FYI, Liquid Riot also has its own restaurant-style kitchen, the Resto-Bar. So yeah, you definitely won’t go hungry either. Just choose from snacks, small plates, sandwiches, burgers, wings, and tacos.

Basically just all the best possible accompaniments for a cool glass of beer! And all of it made with locally sourced ingredients by chefs just as passionate about food as they are about beer.

Yes, my friend, we call this winning at life…to the extreme.

Address: 250 Commercial St, Portland, ME 04101

Hours: Open Friday and Saturday from 12:00 pm to 11:00 pm and Thursday through Monday from 12:00 pm to 10:00 pm.

Price: Beers start at $8 each but I’d opt for a four beer flight for $16 (Try Blushing Star, an award-winning, barrel-aged pilsner)

12. Mast Landing Brewing Company

Over in west Portland, you can find Mast Landing Brewing Company.

And even though they’ve only been in business since 2015, they’ve quickly become a favorite among beer enthusiasts and locals alike.

Also, because they’re a little further away from the main hub of Portland’s vibrant brewery scene, they have an outsider vibe about them that adds to the brewery’s character and charm.

Yeah, sitting with an ice-cold beer by one of their fire pits on a cool evening is an awesome experience that you just don’t get with breweries nearer the center of town!

Plus, Mast Landing has a ridiculously huge number of IPAs available, as well as lager, stout, barrel-aged imperial porter, dry-hopped Saison and more.

And If you find one you like, like REALLY like, you can even purchase ⅙ barrel kegs of certain beers, and have yourself a Mast Landing beer party in your own backyard!

But wait, what’s the must-try beer here at one of the best breweries in Portland Maine? Why, Their flagship stout, Gunner’s Daughter. It’s one that’s available by the keg, although you don’t have to go that far, and that I definitely recommend giving it a try while you’re here!

However, if you get a wee bit hungry during your time here, then be sure to give Mainstay by Mast Landing –  their on-site kitchen – a shot.

Because it’s here that you can complement your beer with plenty of toasted sandwiches, salads, tacos, wraps, pretzels, and cookies.

Just be sure to visit between Wednesday and Sunday when the kitchen is actually open. Otherwise, you’ll only find light snacks available, though you’re welcome to bring your own food as well.

Address: 920 Main St, Westbrook, ME 04092 (this one is one of the best breweries near Portland Maine)

Hours: Open Monday and Tuesday from 12:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Wednesday through Saturday from 12:00 pm to 9:00 pm, and Sunday from 12:00 pm to 6:00 pm.

Price: 10-ounce beers start at $5 each.

13. Rising Tide Brewing Company

A trio of beers

Started by a husband and wife duo in 2010, Rising Tide Brewing Company began like many other Portland breweries on this list…right on the Industrial Way.

But, they have long since moved onwards and upwards to the Kennedy Park area in east Portland. Once there, they were able to open a tasting room, and boom – tone of the best breweries in Portland Maine was born!

There’s also a wide range of beer styles to choose from here. I mean, honey chai strong ale anyone? Or how about a Hefeweizen? Russian imperial stout for the win! Or maybe a fancy AF, Rosé inspired ale? I swear people, I’m not making any of these up!

Another thing that Rising Tide is passionate about is sustainability since they have a lot of different practices that work towards reducing their impact on the environment, and lowering their overall carbon footprint. Which is great!

Because if there’s one thing I know about beer, it’s that you need a planet to be able to drink it on!

BTW, did someone say wood-fired pizza? No? Well, I did, and fortunately for me, Rising Tide provides just that! Because along with their decadent selection of craft beers, Rising Tide is also pretty adept at baking you a perfect pizza pie inside their artisanal wood fire oven.

And to accompany your beyond glorious meal – at least if you visit on a Sunday or Monday – you’ll also have some live music to enjoy!

Yup, yee to the haw my friends at one of the best breweries in Portland Maine.

Address:103 Fox St, Portland, ME 04101

Hours: Open Monday through Thursday from 12:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Friday and Saturday from 12:00 pm to 9:00 pm, and Sunday from 12:00 pm to 6:00 pm.

Price: A 16-ounce pour is $7 but I’d opt for the flight of four, four-ounce pours for $10

14. Bunker Brewing Co

Bunker Brewing Co is arguably one of the best breweries in Portland Maine. It’s a nano brewery that is set in a 1920’s era garage. With both outdoor and indoor seating, this place has an extremely laid back vibe and is well liked by locals and tourists alike. That’s why you will always find a crowd here.

Bunker Brewing Co collaborates with local artisans. They make small batches of craft beer and trust me, you will love them. Not sure which beer to order, try the beer tastings that are offered. It will give you an idea of what will suit your palette.

Did I mention that you can bring your kid along? Yeah. They just need to be seated at the table or accompanied by an adult which is pretty cool!

Address: 17 Westfield St D, Portland, ME 04102, United States

Hours: Mon – Thur: 2-9pm, Fri-Sun: 12pm-9pm

Price: Beers start at $12 for a 4 pack of cans.

15. Baston River Brewing And Distilling

If you want to spend the evening in a super cozy spot with great food and amazing beer then Baston River Brewing and Distilling. There is a lot of attention to detail when it comes to the décor here. In fact, they change things around depending on the season and I’m not just talking about the menu. This is one of the reasons why they have a stream of steady clientele.

If you are visiting make sure to try the burgers. They are scrumptious! The Bloody Mary is delicious too! Then again, you can’t go wrong with any of the cocktails in the place either. The craft beers however are what everyone heads here to try.

The best part is that they accommodate all dietary needs. You may not see it in the menu though. Give them a call beforehand and they will make sure that you have a meal that fits your needs.

Address: 82 Hanover St, Portland, ME 04101, United States

Hours: Tue-Fri: 4-9pm, Fri: 4-10pm, Sat: 11am – 10 pm, Sun: 11am – 7pm

Prices: Beer starts at $8

Best Breweries In Portland Maine FAQ

How Many Breweries Does Portland Maine Have?

Did you know that Portland has 70+ breweries? Yes! I’m not kidding. In fact it has the largest number of breweries per capita in the whole of the United States. This is why Portland was given the nickname Beervana! The breweries produce some of the best quality beer in the state and this makes this city one of the hot spots for beer tasting.

What Is The Most Popular Beer In Maine?

The mighty hoppy IPA! Honestly it is hard to narrow down on just one beer. This is because with 70+ breweries in the city, it is hard to say which beer is absolutely the best. Plus everyone has their own individual preferences. Now if you want to know what is the most sold or consumed beer in the city then it is probably the mighty hoppy IPA.

My recommendation is to give it a try and then try the gazillion other options in the city. You could literally drink a new brand everyday and not run out!

Can You Walk Around With Beer In Portland?

Unfortunately no. It is against the law to walk around with a can or bottle of beer that is opened. Meaning you cannot be drinking and walking about the city. You can however transport sealed cans and bottles. Make sure to note the distinction!
