I mean, I have lived in the city for 30+ years and drink coffee every day. So, to say that I know a thing or two about the best coffee in NYC is an understatement.
In particular, I love grabbing. a cup of Joe at some of the best cafes on the Upper East Side.
The coffee is great, the ambiance is amazing, and I just feel super plush with my flat white made with oat milk.
Plus, some of these coffee places on the Upper East Side are just a great place to relax after exploring epic Upper East Side landmarks like the MET, Guggenheim, and Central Park.
That being said, not every coffee shop on the Upper East Side is amazing. Some are downright gross and super overpriced.
So, I’m gonna give you the inside scoop on coffee shops to avoid and coffee shops to relax the day away in this epic local guide.

Best Coffee Shops on the Upper East Side
1. Maman
Maman is a French-inspired bakery that originated in SoHo. However, this epic spot quickly established itself as a local gem in the heart of the city.
Its reputation remained on the DL until Oprah declared their chocolate chip cookies as one of her ultimate “favorite things.”
This acclaim sparked a surge in the bakery’s popularity. As a result, you can now find Maman all across the city, including the Upper East Side.
So, stop by to admire Maman’s charming decor and exquisite delft china. Their robust coffee only adds to its allure, as does the quiche, chocolate croissant, macadamia nut cookie, and lattes.
Local Tip: Order the nutty chocolate chip cookies. They are to die for and make this one of the best dessert spots in New York City.

Previously known as Yorkafe, Eat Pretty is one of the best-hidden gems in New York City‘s Upper East Side.
See, this Upper East Side cafe underwent an enchanting rebrand, transforming into a pink paradise that comes complete with outdoor seating shaded by miniature umbrellas.
Although the interior is more than a little cozy, there’s plenty of space for you to enjoy al fresco dining on pink benches.
You’ll also love all of the pastel-hued flowers and giant teddy bears that surround the cafe. Don’t worry about crowds though since this place is pretty under the radar.
If you’re unsure of what to order, try a latte, hot cocoa, avocado toast, steak taco, or the Bagel BLT.
Each of these items has received rave reviews from either me or my friends (or both).
And of course, remember to indulge in a cupcake for dessert since all of the sweets here are baked fresh on the premises, except the croissants.
3. Hutch & Waldo
This enchanting little cafe has a distinctive Australian vibe and has become an integral part of the Upper East Side’s food scene since its inception in 2016.
The delightful interior combined with an impressive New York City brunch menu has earned it a loyal following.
That being said, I thought their Brekkie Sando was very average the last time I was here. Yes, the bread was good but the rest of the sandwich fell flat for me.
However, many visitors love their grilled chicken salad with sweet potatoes and a kale and quinoa salad. So, maybe opt for that instead.
Their coffee was also really good. I ordered the flat white and can highly recommend it. Yeah, I never miss a chance to order a flat white in an Aussie-style cafe.

4. Ella’s Cafe Espresso and Wine Bar
Opened in 2021, this espresso and wine bar is one of the best cafes on the Upper East Side where you can enjoy a wide variety of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks.
See, it’s a charming little Mediterranean-inspired wine bar/coffee shop that will make you instantly feel like you’re at home, with family.
It’s also a tranquil oasis in which you can enjoy an expertly brewed cup of coffee and pair it with delectable Mediterranean/Israeli cuisine.
In particular, the Toastini is exceptional and packed with amazing flavor. Order it with a delish chai latte and you’ll keep coming back for more.
However, feel free to stop by in the evenings and unwind with a flatbread, and a calming glass of Israeli wine/beer.
Local Tip: The coffee here is strong but really good. There are also a ton of vegan options at the vegan-friendly restaurant in NYC.

Sure, this location is usually packed with people. But, the coffee is delicious and the cafe is stunning.

Local Tip: Stop by Goodwill after so that you can shop at one of the best thrift shops in Manhattan.

I prefer the 84th Street location since there is an expansive downstairs sitting area. It has a sleek, sophistication about it that is accented by modern pictures and sleek, clean lines.
There’s also a lovely backyard patio where you can sit down and relax with your specialty coffee, gourmet sandwich, or artisanal pastry.
I always get the iced chai latte and almond croissant when I stop in here. It’s also nice that this spot turns into a charming little wine bar in the evening where you can grab a drink with a few friends.

This is probably the most authentic French bakery you will find in the city since the owners came over here from France.
Yup, they took over “Canele by Celine” and transformed it into a place where you can get authentic, handmade, French pastries like croissants, Madeleines, jams, breads, cakes, and more.
I love the chocolate croissant, the French-style cheesecake, and the ham and cheese quiche.
Just be forewarned that there really isn’t any seating and that this is more of a grab-and-go type place.
However, you can snap a photo with the bubble gum pink exterior and look at pics of people’s super cute pets that are hung up on the wall.

Truth be told, Hex and Co. isn’t on this list because they serve amazing coffee. Sure, the coffee is okay.
But, this cafe on the Upper East Side is listed because they have an AMAZING selection of board games to choose from. Like, over a thousand to be exact.
So, if you’re looking for things to do on the Upper East Side today and have a group of friends then swing by Hex and Co.
Prices start at just $10.00 per player. Plus, they have a great selection of coffee, killer cocktails, and some rad pub grub too.
Just don’t add this Upper East Side cafe to your list of things to do solo in NYC since you need a group to dive into epic games like Dungeons and Dragons.

I love to come here and get the grilled cheese sandwich. You can also stop by for happy hour around 3:00 pm and get a well-priced charcuterie board.
