1. Spruce Head

If you are looking for some romantic weekend getaways in Maine and one of the best beach towns in Maine, then Spruce Head is a fabulous destination.

The peninsula, located about 15 minutes from Rockland, is particularly desirable for couples who love nature and the great outdoors.

Clark Island, attached to the mainland by a causeway, is a wonderfully quiet place where you can go to explore the area’s many nature trails and find a secret beach to call your own.

Otherwise, you could always head to a much-beloved local swimming spot at the old island quarry or picnic here amidst the huge rocks that overlook the beautiful blue-green quarry waters.

And if you have a bit of extra time, definitely visit the nearby Marshall Point Lighthouse in Port Clyde, which was featured in the classic film, Forrest Gump

Or, take a local ferry to Mohegan Island and take a romantic stroll through the seaside gardens of this famed artistic community.

Now, for stellar accommodations try the Craignair Inn for your romantic getaway in Maine. It’s a charming inn with cozy rooms
that feature luxurious bedding and robes.

Plus, there are pet-friendly rooms available if you want to bring your precious pooch along for the weekend.

A homemade breakfast is also served in their restaurant daily and offers guests amazing panoramic views of the ocean.

An outstanding chef here also whips up delectable local fare that can be enjoyed during a romantic candlelight dinner as you watch the sunset over the ocean.

And if you happen to encounter a bit of bad weather, then you could always cozy up by the fireplace or play the piano (or guitar) as you serenade your loved one.

2. Kennebunkport

Water coming to shore on the beautiful beaches of Kennebunkport, Maine.

Kennebunkport is easily one of the romantic getaways in Maine. It’s a historic little village in southern Maines that was first settled in the 1600s and that was well known for its vibrant ship-building industry.

Today though, its cozy New England charm attracts visitors from all across the country who want to enjoy some of the town’s most beautiful beaches, including sandy Goose Rocks Beach and slightly smaller Arundel Beach.

However, if you’re not all that interested in working on your tan (or burn in my pasty white case), then you could always enjoy a bit of history at The Seashore Trolley Museum, which features large informational displays and a vast collection of historic streetcars.

St. Ann’s Episcopal Church is also pretty damn impressive since it was first built in1887 and is a stunning little stone church that gives parishioners impressive views of the nearby ocean.

But, because no weekend getaway in Maine could ever be complete without a trip to a beyond gorg lighthouse, do beeline it on over to the Goat Island Lighthouse. It was first built in ye olde 1833 and is quietly tucked away in the harbor of the ever-enchanting, Cape Porpoise.

Now, if you need an uber-fab place to stay while in Kennebunkport, try the Tides Beach Club. Yeah, it’s pretty plush with a capital “P” since it’s the only hotel in the area that actually sits on Goose Rock beach itself!

So, after checking into one of their twenty-one premium guest rooms (Imagine vibrant, contemporary decor that is furnished by Jonathan Adler and bath products from Malin Goetz), you can relax on the spacious front porch and savor sweeping oceanfront views or take a complimentary shuttle into town.

And when you start feeling more than a little peckish, enjoy a quiet meal at their on-site restaurant, which is known for serving some of the best seafood in Maine (The Goose Rocks Lobster Roll is supposed to be awesome. Ans they have a nice selection of wine and cocktails).

Camden is a picturesque town on Maine’s Penobscot Bay that filled with a variety of things to do during one of many romantic getaways in Maine.

Feel the romantic charm as you stroll through the streets and wander in and out of local shops that are nestled along the water. While you’re here, be sure to pop into any one of the area’s local art galleries or check out the ever-awesome, Funky Farmhouse for unique, vintage-style decor.

And for lunch. head to The Camden Deli for a delicious selection of homemade soups, salads, and sandwiches that can be savored on the restaurant’s back patio or in nearby Harbour Park, where you can watch the boats come in and out of the harbor.

What, interested in something other than a deli? Then try out any one of the restaurants along the water for an amazing meal with a view of the ocean.

Additionally, multiple tour companies here offer lovely sightseeing cruises out of the harbor that include a visit to several nearby lighthouses!

And if you’re looking to spice up your weekend with a little adventure, then do a kayaking tour at the harbor or head to Mount Battie. Once here, you can enjoy a number of different hiking trails and or take in scenic views of Camden Harbor and the surrounding area.

Luckily for you, Camden has a wide variety of accommodations to choose from, including charming rentals in the center of town and historic inns along the water.

So, If you’d like to stay outside the center of town, check out the romantic Inn at Sunrise Point. Otherwise, if you’re looking for a bit of a splurge, then try the luxurious Camden Harbour Inn.

It sits right on the water and is a modern, boutique hotel with lovely old-world vibes since it sits inside a historic building with vintage-inspired furnishings.

Therefore, choose from one of their grand suites or luxury suites and enjoy a complimentary daily breakfast filled with fresh-baked pastries, a menu of a la carte items, or a sumptuous buffet of fruit, yogurt, granola, and basically anything else you can dream up.

4. Boothbay Harbor

Some of the homes that line the quiet waters of Boothbay Harbor, Maine.

Not gonna lie, I am hardcore obsessed with Boothbay Harbor as one of the best romantic getaways in Maine.

I mean, not only did my family visit this idyllic little fishing village at least one year for seventeen glorious years, but there are a ton of things to do in this picture-perfect, quaint AF New England town.

To start, take a walk along the scenic, 1,000-foot long footbridge that connects the east and west sides of the Harbor. Admire the many lobster boats (and colorful buoys) that dot the water and take in the beauty of some of the island lighthouses off in the distance.

Next, take one of twenty-five daily cruises that depart from the harbor, to places like Burnt Island and Monhegan Island (we used to take the local mail ferry but you could do a romantic sunset cruise, ride a local windjammer, or go whale watching), or try your hand at sea kayaking your way along the area’s many quiet coves and rocky shores.

Afterward, trek through one of the area’s many picturesque hiking trails, go for a dip at Linekin Bay, admire 250-acres of botanical beauty at Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, visit some local see life at the Maine State Aquarium (I used to pet small sharks here), or learn a bit about the region’s distant past at the Boothbay Railway Village.

Yup, there’s a lot to do here and you probably won’t have a ton of time. Therefore, it’s essential that you get a good night’s rest at one of the town’s finest hotels, the Spruce Point Inn

It’s a high-end resort with polished clapboard buildings and chic, modern accommodations that include everything from private rooms to full townhouses.

All of the rooms here also come fully outfitted with free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, iPod docks, minifridges, and in-room Keurig coffeemakers. Some premium suites even feature private balconies, luxurious soaking tubs, and working fireplaces.

There are also a wealth of other amenities here, like three on-site restaurants, a bar, two outdoor pools, tennis courts, a fitness center, a spa,  and a hot tub – making this the ideal destination for one of many romantic getaways in Maine.

5. Maine Windjammer Cruise

By: Lori of Travlinmad

A Maine windjammer with red sails.

If you’re looking for one of the most romantic getaways in Maine, then book a Maine Windjammer cruise and see Penobscot Bay from the deck of a tall schooner that’s been navigating these waters for centuries.

“What exactly is a windjammer cruise?” I hear you wondering. Well, Windjammer cruises take you where the wind and tides dictate, so your final destination may vary from one cruise to the next.

There are also nearly a dozen different sailing vessels that are a part of the Maine Windjammer fleet, which embark on 3, 5, and 7-day cruises out of Rockland and Camden harbors on the coast of Maine – mainly because this part of Maine has historically been at the heart of windjammer sailing.

Now, depending on the type of ship you choose, your cruise can range in style from rustic to luxury, with some ships even running themed cruises and weekend getaways centered on local foods and craft cocktails

Also, each cruise typically features a small number of passengers (between 15 and 25 max), making for a more intimate experience that fosters a wonderful sense of community between travelers and crew. Add in a distinct lack of cellphone reception and some beautifully outfitted, cozy rooms and you have the perfect place for a romantic weekend getaway in Maine.

Plus, the towns of Rockland and Camden are both wonderful destinations that are definitely worth exploring either a few days before or after your cruise. Especially since these two charming coastal villages are overflowing with quaint shops, delicious restaurants, exquisite art museums, and exciting cultural attractions.

That’s why, If you want to experience a lesser-known part of Maine, then there’s nothing quite like a Maine Windjammer cruise for a romantic weekend getaway.

And if you don’t want to spend the entire weekend at sea, then you could try a 2-hour Windjammer day cruise from Camden instead!

Tickets start at just $42.95 and allow you to sail past Penobscot Bay’s famous lighthouses, marvel at local wildlife, see expansive summer estates, and admire charming lobster boats from the decks of a historic 19th-century schooner known as Appledore II.

Where to Board the Cruise: Windjammer cruises depart from either Camden or Rockland.

Price: A 3-day cruise will typically cost around $783 per person. a 4-day cruise will cost around $925 per person, and a 6-day cruise will cost around $1200 per person. You can also usually get a 5% “early bird” discount if you purchase your cruise before either February or March 1.

Usually, you will make an initial deposit and make final payments closer to the departure date of your cruise. Also, everything is usually included with the price of your cruise except alcohol, dinner on the first “day”, the cost of parking your car at the port of your choice, and gratuity for the crew.

6. Moosehead Lake

The shores of Moosehead Lake at sunrise.. One of the best romantic getaways in Maine.
The shores of Moosehead Lake at sunrise. One of the best romantic getaways in Maine.

Located in the heart of Maine’s beautiful highlands region is Moosehead Lake – one of the most amazing romantic getaways in Maine.

Not only does the lake itself actually look like an actual moose’s head (at least on a map it does), but it’s just straight-up enormous since it covers an area of 75,000 acres and is forty miles long.

That’s why it’s really not all that surprising that this is the single largest lake in all of Maine and home to a wealth of resident salmon, brook trout, and lake trout.

So, feel free to cruise the lake in your very own rental boat or hire a pro-guide who can take you fishing in some of the area’s super secret local spots. Or, simply cast a line from land in the shallow waters of Lily and Spencer Bays.

Otherwise, you could always go jet skiing, join a narrated steamboat day cruise aboard the Katahdin, do a wildlife tour and look for moose, go camping at Lily Bay State Park, admire some amazing fall foliage, hike to a B-52 crash site (or see some wreckage at the Center for Moosehead History in Greenville), sip on a glass of wine at the Spotted Cat Winery, do a seaplane tour, go ATVing, and so much more.

Because this a seriously amazing destination for any and all outdoor lovers.

So, after a fun-filled day filled of outdoor adventures (and a stop at Kely’s Landing for spectaculiar lake views and a delicious plate of scallops), relax in a charming room at The Lodge at Moosehead Lake

It sits less than a mile away from Moose Bay and is a distinctly modern place with a cozy country feel that perfectly matches the surrounding area.

All rooms here also feature fantastic amenities like fireplaces, whirlpool tubs, electric blankets, pillow-top mattresses. in-room coffeemakers, free WiFi, cable TV, and a daily turndown service.

Complimentary breakfast is also served daily on-site and guests will love having access to an outdoor fire pit, a communal patio, a casual pub, an upscale restaurant, and a guest pantry full of snacks and drinks.

Seafaring Rockland might be known as the Lobster Capital of the United States, but this maritime charmer is also a favorite destination of art lovers in New England too.

That’s because the magical light of the rocky coastline here has captured the hearts and minds of talented landscape artists for centuries.

Accordingly, Rockland is blessed with a vibrant art scene that includes premiere facilities like the Center for Maine Contemporary Art (it has a ton of interactive modern art displays), The Farnsworth (it features a comprehensive collection of works from American artists like the Wyeth family), and nearly twenty different independent art galleries that line the streets and feature the works of local artists.

However, this laid-back, romantic getaway in Maine is also home to many award-winning restaurants like the one-of-a-kind Primo, where reservations are hard to come by (plan accordingly). Lobster roll connoisseurs and purists alike will also enjoy the fare at eateries like Claws, Archers on the Pier, and Café Miranda.

Several Windjammer cruises also set sail from Rockland, so art-lovers can extend their stay and take in the view from aboard a historic sailboat – at least after they’ve done a bit of retail therapy in one of the town’s many boutique shops.

Throw in a number of picturesque lighthouses and an almost neverending array of enchanting hiking trails, and couples have just one of the many great romantic getaways in Maine – a place that is best explored between May and October.

iNow, although there are many different bed and breakfasts to choose from in Rockland, the best spot in town is 250 Main.

It’s a charming, well-located boutique property( with a roof deck) that has created quite the stir ever since it first opened to absolute rave reviews.

So, imagine a series of airy and inviting rooms, with sweeping views of Penobscott Bay, that pay homage to the maritime heritage of the area.

8. Belfast

Locally known as the broiler capital of the world since Belfast holds an annual barbeque chicken festival every July, this is one of those lesser-known romantic getaways in Maine that you are your partner will absolutely love.

It’s a quaint city in Waldo county with only 7,000 residents – a place where you can go to relax and enjoy all that Maine has to offer.

Some local highlight include a stroll along the Belfast Harborwalk,  a walk through Belfast City Park, shopping at the United Farmers Market of Maine (and the Lupine Cottage artist coop), a ride along the 2.2-mile Passy Rail Trail, a visit to the Cuckold Lighthouse, a visit to Good Karma Farm, and so much more.

And when you’re not checking out all of the area’s local attractions, spend the night at the centrally located Belfast Bay Inn.

Suites here have a luxurious but homey, New England feel to them and feature supremely nifty things like spacious living areas, private elevators,  beautiful exposed brick walls, a private bath with a deep-soaking tub, free WIFI, TV, and a working fireplace in some select rooms.

Visitors can also enjoy access to a communal garden patio and delicious complimentary breakfast spread that is served daily – easily making this one of the most romantic getaways in Maine.

Believe it or not, the name Monhegan in Algonquin actually means “out-to-sea island.” So if you’re looking for a remote, romantic getaway in Maine, then you’re in the right place.

Located just 10 miles off the coast of Maine, the best way to get to Monhegan Island is by ferry from Boothbay Harbor. Typically, the ride takes around 90-minutes and is an exhilarating experience since you get to cruise along on the open Atlantic Ocean

Once you arrive in this tiny fishing village, you’ll discover that part of Monhegan’s charm centers around a slow-paced lifestyle where you can fully appreciate your beautiful surroundings—and your companion.

Several walking paths also circumvent the island, the most breathtaking of which is the Monhegan Island Cliff Trail. It is surrounded by beautiful wildflowers and showcases a series of steep cliffs that are home to rare birds and perpetually crashed in upon by gaint waves.

If you want, you can also have a quiet on Lighthouse Hill. Just grab a couple of Lobster Rolls at The Fish House and enjoy lunch overlooking the scenic beauty of the harbor. Afterward, sample local craft beer at the Monhegan Brewing Company.

Now, because Monhegan lays claim to three generations of the Wyeth family, it sustains a thriving artist community.

Therefore, be sure to visit the art museum inside the old light keeper’s house, in addition to several other galleries and open studios that can be found throughout the island.

And if you love a great view, you’ll want to stay at The Island Inn, whose front porch and rooms overlook the water.

This majestic inn is a throwback to the 1800s but features all the classic comforts of modern-day life. You can also enjoy delicious seafood in the fine dining room, which is open to the public, or dine in-suite for the ultimate romantic experience.

12. Bar Harbor

Ships docked at Bar Harbor, Maine.
Ships docked at Bar Harbor, Maine.

This popular tourist town makes it on this list of romantic getaways in Maine because, well, hi, it’s awesome.

I mean, not only is Bar Harbor largely considered to be the unofficial gateway to the sheer cliffs of Acadia National Park, but it also sits near picturesque Mount Desert Island and provides visitors with enchanting views of Frenchman Bay.

Look off into the distance and you’ll even see Acadia’s ever-iconic Cadillac Mountain (Gorham Mountain is cool too), the tallest mountain on the Atlantic Coast of the United States and a perfect place to watch the sunrise.

If you want, you could also drive Acadia’s famous loop road and marvel at Thunder Hole, a small inlet where waves naturally crash into the rocks and push air/water out of the cavern.

And the result? A thunderous sound (hence the name) coupled with a water spout that can soar up to forty feet in the air.

Afterward, stop by Jordan’s Pond House Restaurant (it’s in Acadia itself Get the seafood chowdah and the lobstah roll) before hitting up other local attractions like the George B. Dorr Museum of Natural History, the College of the Atlantic Gardens, the Abbe Museum (it’s actually a Smithsonian museum with a vast collection of Native American artifacts), and the Mount Desert Oceanarium.

However, to escape the sometimes overwhelming crowds, get up early and take a walk along the Shore Path. It starts at Agamond Park and takes you along the coast and past local landmarks like Porcupine Rock and the Bar Harbor Inn.

Afterward, spend the night (or ten because you won’t want to leave) at The Inn on Mount Desert. I love it because it’s a nice, family-run inn that features modern but super relaxed rooms that come with things like free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, tea/coffee-making facilities, microwaves, and minifridges.

During your stay, you’ll also get access to a private balcony with either garden or harborside views and can even savor a delicious complimentary breakfast too. Because yes, it really is all about the free food.

Acadia National Park
Acadia National Park

Located on the rocky coast of Maine, Acadia National Park is the perfect destination for couples who find romance amidst the tranquility of nature.

Because the overwhelming beauty of this national park can’t be understated. Especially since everywhere you turn there seem to be ponds twinkling at twilight, rolling hills, quaint lighthouses, and awe-inspiring panoramas.

Without a doubt though, one of the best and most romantic things to do in Acadia is to watch the sunrise from Cadillac Mountain.

In the early morning light, the sun dances in the sky and lights up the granite mountain in beautiful shades of pink. The views here are also incredible since you can see the town of Bar Harbor, the Atlantic Ocean, and small islands that dot the coast all far off in the distance – making it the perfect place to cuddle up next to your loved one with a cozy blanket.

For more stunning views, head over to Jordan Pond. This is a large pond here that is flanked by rolling hills in the background, and that gives you access to several mellow hiking trails that are easily some of the best hikes in Maine

You can also grab a seat in the garden and stop in for a bite to eat at the Jordan Pond House restaurant, a historic spot that serves up amazing popovers.

But of course, you can’t really visit Maine without exploring a lighthouse or two. And Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse does not disappoint.

While here you can watch the waves roll up against the rocky shore at sunset and grab a couples’ photo op with the gorgeous lighthouse in the background.

Now, since you’ll want to spend at least two days in Acadia, get a good night’s rest at Ullikana Inn. Kayakers on the lake in Deer Isle Maine.

One of the most romantic weekend getaways in Maine for any couple is the lovely outdoor destination of Deer Isle, Maine.

It’s a laid-back island in Penobscot Bay that’s the perfect place to unwind, recharge and get back to nature. The serene and peaceful environment is full of rustic cabins and seaside cottages that add a romantic atmosphere to the trip.

Therefore, couples who enjoy outdoor activities will love to explore the many nature preserves all over the island – the most popular of which is the Crockett Cove Woods Preserve. It’s a fog forest, a nickname that is attributed to fact that the terrain here is covered in moss and lichen.

So, as you can imagine, a couple’s stroll through this beautiful preserve is truly enchanting.

Another romantic activity is kayaking or canoeing. Adventurous couples can rent equipment from Driftwood Kayaks or book a guided tour. The bay is also deep, making for calm waters and protected coves that are fun to explore. This also allows beginners to easily navigate the waterways around the island.

Additionally, the island is home to several charming, local country stores and antique shops where you can pick up a keepsake or two from your trip. This way, you can keep those romantic memories alive and bring a little piece of Deer Isle home with you.

And for a delightful stay on the island, try the Inn on the Harbor. Well-appointed rooms here sit inside a yellow, 19th-century, building that overlooks Stonington Harbor and that is just two minutes away from the Stonington Fish Pier and the Opera House.

All individually decorated rooms here also have a relaxed feel to them (some with private decks and working fireplaces) with spacious sitting areas, free WIFI, flat-screen TVs, and a complimentary breakfast buffet that is served daily in the on-site cafe.

16. Cape Neddick

If you want to head out on unforgettable romantic getaways from Maine then consider heading to Cape Neddick. This quaint little spot is known for the Cape Neddick lighthouse, also popularly known as the Nubble lighthouse. Not only is it one of Maine’s most popular attractions, it is also one of the most photographed lighthouses in the world.

Aside from the iconic lighthouse, Cape Neddick has some really jaw dropping views of the bay. There’s also a really cool beach that you can laze around on.

One best thing to do while you are in the area however is to head for a spa. The Cliff house Maine is an amazing luxury accommodation that sprawls across over 25,000 square feet. Amazing Romantic Getaways From Maine FAQ

What Is The Best Time Of The Year For A Romantic Vacation In Maine?

The choice is really yours. What are you looking for in your romantic getaways from Maine? The peak season is between 4th of July and ends around Labor day. Mind you, this is the busiest and most expensive time to travel in the state. It also has great weather.

If you want to travel in good-ish weather but avoid the crowds, I would suggest traveling either immediately before or after the season. You could also choose to travel during the winter months and enjoy a bit of skiing or snuggle in a nice warm room with your significant other.

What Month Is The Best For Fall In Maine?

Nothing is quite as romantic as exploring the fall foliage with your significant other. Maine offers so many great opportunities to do just that. The best season for this is between the last week of September and the first week of October. Mind you, everyone will be out at this time too!

A week here and there will make a big difference when it comes to the crowds and you will still get a pretty epic view!

Can You See The Northern Lights In Maine?

Yes! Nothing is as mind blowing as watching the northern lights from Maine. The best time to do this is between August and October. You do have to check the forecast so do that before you drag your significant other outdoors!

Anywhere with sunsets and sunrises like that is a must see in my book. I haven't been to Maine but I hear great things. I love the look of the small towns and picturesque places. I've been wanting to visit the Atlantic provinces of Canada since I likely won't be able to leave the country this year, and Maine reminds me of some of the places I've been looking at - and so close to the Canadian border. Acadia National Park is so high on the list too, just beautiful

Yes! I would love to go up north and cross the Canadian border but I have no idea when things will open back up. Hopefully one day.
