Best Breweries in NYC – Manhattan

1. Torch & Crown Brewing Company

This Manhattan brewery got its start from a shared tragic experience (FYI, I’m using this term jokingly). See, when each of the founders was just 16, they had their fake IDs confiscated in a bar in the East Village.

Afterward, they decided that, well, they should just make their own beer instead!

So, with one friend studying chemistry and the other learning finance, they later teamed up and opened the Torch & Crown Brewing Company – a place that is now is easily one of the best breweries in NYC.

Yup, way to damn the man, save the empire, and beat the system! Woot, woot!

Anyway, Inside this spacious building in Soho, one of the best areas to stay in NYC, you’ll find twelve featured beers to enjoy, and two levels with communal seating areas in which to drink them.

Plus, there’s even a large outdoor seating area where you can wine and dine in the fresh air.

And while the brewery itself doesn’t have tours, they do have offer a virtual tasting.

Wait, “What’s that?” you may rightly wonder.

Well, they’ll basically send beer right to your door, and then someone from their team will guide you and your friends through a fun and conversational beer experience.

Hold up. Did I just say wine AND dine? Why yes human on the other side of this screen, I sure did!

Because Torch & Crown also has an associated restaurant with lunch, brunch, and dinner menus available. So, you can easily get a tasty meal while getting your drinkie drink on the next time you visit – a menu full of sandwiches, burgers, steaks, salads, and sides…oh my!

Heck, you can even get a full roasted pig with all the trimmings…at least if you pre-book three days in advance. And surely anywhere that can barbecue a whole pig for you must be one of the best breweries in NYC!

If you’re feeling thirsty in Little Italy then have no fear – Randolph Beer is here (I swear I’m a poet)!

They’ve got up to 36 beers on draft, with names such as Business Time, Randy Candy, and R2D2, plus 30 different whiskey varieties to go with them. So you’ll be spoilt for choice when you step inside another one of the best breweries in NYC!

But, beer isn’t the only thing that will wet your whistle while you’re here. Because in addition to their fantastic selection of cocktails and wines, Randolph Beer also has an extensive brunch and dinner menu.

A plethora of foodie goodness that features everything from french toast to breakfast tacos to sandwiches, burgers, and all kinds of spicy bowls.

You can find this cozy slice of pub life in the financial district right at the southern tip of Manhattan, just one street over from the waterfront.

It’s also locally known as The Porterhouse Brewing Company Bar and works alongside the Lovelace Cocktail & Gin Bar to serve up a veritable rainbow of craft beers, cocktails, and spirits – all of which can be enjoyed with their delicious hot food and their fantastic live music on the weekends.

So yeah, this is one of the best breweries in NYC that is definitely built for a good time!

And in addition to all of their own beers, Porterhouse Brewing Company Bar also features a wide array of guest beers that are of varying strengths and flavors, both on draft and by the bottle or can.

They’re also no stranger to innovation since, for President’s Day, they managed to recreate the Hot Ale Flip, a historic drink that was the favorite of none other than George Washington himself!

So, give it a try for a literal taste of history. Although I warn you, it’s definitely hot!

Plus, being within such close proximity of the harbor also means that there’s tons of seafood on the menu, with lobster, oysters, pan-seared salmon, and fish tacos all available for you to order.

4. Interboro Spirits & Ales

Whether you’re into lager, IPA, sour, stout, or something special, no worries because Interboro has got you covered.

See, this independently owned company actually makes and distributes all of its own beers. So yeah, you know they really give a hoot about what they produce.

So much so that they don’t actually trust anyone else to distribute them – now that’s what I call dedication!

Now, in addition to their wide array of divine craft beers, Interboro is also experimenting with making their very own whiskey.

And If that’s something that you might be into, then you can easily book a whiskey tasting session with them, and feel classy AF.

Plus, as part of the tour, you’ll even get to keep a commemorative Interboro whiskey glass as a super nifty, NYC souvenir!

So, If you’re into a happier, more casual vibe, then make sure you do this tour during the weekend since there’s live music to enjoy almost every Saturday and Sunday night, with occasional gigs popping up throughout the week too.

I mean, Beer and a DJ? Whiskey and jazz? Yes, please!

FYI, Interboro also has an in-house kitchen that serves food Friday through Sunday. And you can expect good ol’ fashioned bar food from them as well, with wings, hotdogs, grilled cheese, and even spicy chorizo bratwurst on offer, in addition to a variety of different breads and dips.

5. Coney Island Brewing Company

Coney Island Brewing Company has a very unusual history. Because when they started off not-so-way-back in 2007 they were actually the world’s smallest brewery and tucked away in Coney Island’s Freakatorium.

A crazy start, right?

But, then in 2012, Hurricane Sandy hit and basically destroyed the entire brewery. So they relocated a few steps down the road and started again from scratch.

Now, fast forward almost ten years and they’ve been going strong ever since – Something I personally love since I am all about the happy endings (Hey, get your mind out of the gutter. Not THOSE happy endings).

Also, just in case you were wondering, Coney Island Brewing Company’s official logo is the Parachute Jump.

Or, that giant metal tower that stands 250 feet in the air on Coney Island’s Boardwalk and that is unofficially known as “the Eiffel Tower of Brooklyn”. An iconic image that is emblazoned on every can of beer that this brewery produces.

Their taproom also offers a dozen different craft beers, including IPAs, pilsner, stout, ale, and fruity beers too. All of which you can be sampled from the comfort of their outdoor beer garden!

While you’re here, you can also enjoy Coney Island Eats, which offers a selection of sandwiches, burgers, hotdogs, flatbreads, salads and smaller bites that you can expertly use to soak up some of that alcoholly goodness.

6. Sixpoint Brewery

Since 2004 Sixpoint Brewery has been working hard to become part of your best breweries in NYC list.

So much so that they have a specific Mad Science method to crafting their beers, and use a six-point star as their logo, which is a combination of the Brewer’s Star, a symbol of the Brewer’s Guild, and the Nautical Star.

A unique icon of brewing awesomeness that pays homage to the neighborhood’s nautical past. So yeah, just look for that immortal six-point star on your beer can and you’re good to go!

But wait, what else is so special about these beer cans? Well, according to Sixpoint, they’re not cans, they’re Nanokegs.

See, because storing craft beer in a keg is the way to go, Sixpoint actually packages all of their beer inside little kegs instead of traditional cans. Yup, this part of their Mad Science methodology hard at work!

And added bonus? There are A TON of different beers on offer here, all of which can be found inside cans featuring fun and funky designs.

No, Seriously! There are over 60 different beers to choose from, with more than 30 limited edition beers rotating in and out throughout the year.

On top of that, they even produce some experimental smaller batches with wild flavors – like one that was brewed with oyster shells!

And of course, they got merch, yo. Yup, t-shirts, jackets, sunglasses (obvs!), beanies, and caps aplenty, all with some pretty cool designs that everyone will love.

How to Get There: Carroll Street Station is the nearest subway, but it’s a half-hour walk away. So I recommend getting either the B57 or B61 bus which stops almost right outside on the corner of Van Dyke Street and Dwight Street

7. Grimm Artisanal Ales

The co-founders of Grimm Artisanal Ales honed their craft while performing as musicians in Belgium – a place well known for their quality ales.

No, really. Trust me on this people. Belgians really know how to make beer!

And after almost a decade of experimenting and tinkering with their home-brews, these beer-making aficionados founded their Brooklyn-based brewery in 2013 – continually refining their product ever since.

So, you can only imagine what kind of insane flavor combinations they’ve managed to come up with!

I mean, there’s Black Forest Dark Sour Ale, Atomic Peace Foeder-Fermented Golden Sour, Key Lime Pie, Carrot Cake Pop!, and an IPA called Mating Dance, just to name a few.

That’s why, these guys are either totally crazy, or they know exactly what they’re doing! I’d personally like to think the later since this is one of the best breweries in NYC.

In any case, there are hundreds of different beers to choose from and enjoy within their spacious indoor seating area.

And if you’re hankering for some food to go along with your beverage of choice, be aware that Grimm Artisanal Ales doesn’t have a restaurant per se.

But, they do have finger foods and snacks that’ll help tide you over until you find yourself a full meal elsewhere.

You can also peruse through their epic collection of hats, shirts, bags, and glassware (in their merch store) to show your undying love and devotion for this wicked awesome New York brewery.

8. Other Half Brewing Company

Effort and thoughtfulness are the main philosophies behind the Other Half Brewing Company – principles that are definitely working since they’ve got several locations all across New York and Washington DC.

And I can see why since the sheer number of different beers that they have on offer here is truly staggering!

So, choose between pale ale, cream ale, barleywine, larger, porter, IPA, pilsner, and so on. Because if you can think of it, then you can most certainly drink it here!

Oh, and, added awesomeness? They also have 20 beers on tap here. And yes, that doesn’t even include their bottles!

Yeah, this is all mainly because Other Half Brewing works collaboratively with a huge number of brewers – both locally and from around the world.

As a result, they have access to a stupidly large amount of ingredients, recipes, and products. Hence the whole ridiculous number of beers on offer here.

And in fact, that doesn’t even include a whole other facet of their business: Pastrytown. Wait, what?

Yup, that’s right. Pastrytown is an animated series through which you can also buy beer and merch and all kinds of things! I honestly don’t know what I was expecting when I discovered Other Half Brewing, but I wasn’t expecting this!

Wait! Do they also do merch? Why yes they do, and it is c-o-l-o-r-f-u-l! Seriously, there are so many different designs on shirts, hats, glassware and accessories, with unique Pastrytown designs available too.

So, now you can drink beer, watch your new fave show, and don a brand new t-shirt…all at the same time. Yup, we’re living large here in NYC people!

9. Gun Hill Brewing Company

Gun Hill Brewing Company is proud to be a part of the “new revolution in New York brewing”. So, get pumped and start banging those drums, yo!

Because this Bronx establishment is easily one of the best breweries in NYC and the beautiful brainchild of two friends who met by chance at a baseball tryout back in 2004,

And Gun Hill? Well, that name comes from the nearby spot where the British were defeated during the Revolutionary War after the local colonists dragged a cannon up the hill and fired at them.

Now that’s what I call dedication to the cause!

But, back in the here and now, this brewery is actually a much more relaxed place, with over a dozen different beers available on tap and by the bottle or can.

While you’re here, make sure to try out one of Gun Hill Brewery’s award-winning beers: Void of Light, which has won several awards over the years, and Spirit 76. See, now you too can taste the victory!

A word to the wise though: this place is for serious drinkers y’all.

So, no food, no tour.  Just top-quality craft beers available on tap and by the can.

But they do have one more thing – merch! I’m talking t-shirts, sweatshirts, sweatpants, trucker caps, and even a custom beer cooler. So, now you too can show your love for the Gun Hill Brewery to anyone and everyone you meet!

10. The Bronx Brewery

The Bronx Brewery has been brewing beer since ye olde 2011. They also operate under “the pillars of community, creativity, and inclusivity”.

That’s why they see their beer as a way to promote positive cultural change. And I for one say a hearty, “Right on” to that!

Now, you might also find one or two beers that you’ve never heard of here, or that you can’t find anywhere else in NYC.

You know, things like grapefruit seltzerita, sour cherry schwarzbier, good old American pale ale, peach and rye IPA, and many more. There’s even a Bollywood-inspired mango lassi IPA.

Yup, I bet you didn’t think you’d ever drink one of those!

And if you’re after food, then you’ll the fact that the Bronx Brewery uses their good friend Empanology to supply all their food – a company that started out as a pop-up food stand in The Bronx Brewery’s back yard.

Fast forward a few years and they are now fully established there, providing ravenous patrons with an amazing selection of burgers, sandwiches, wings, rice bowls, and empanadas with epic fillings like chicken truffle mac and cheese, spicy shrimp, and even pumpkin carrot loaf cake.

Yes folks, it really is dinner and dessert in one!

11. Big aLICe Brewing Co.

So who is Big aLICe? Well, she’s a big power generator!

See, in 1963, the Allis-Chalmers company opened the enormous generator to supply the nearby Queens community with power. Locals called the generator “Big Aliss”, and, well, the rest is history.

That’s why, even all these years later, “Big Aliss” is still an immortal Queens landmark. So much so that the Big aLICe Brewing Co. actually derived their name from her.

But, you know what’s really cool about this New York City brewery? It’s a Farm Brewery, which means that they work closely with New York State farmers to procure all of their ingredients and help support local businesses!

And when combined, all those delicious ingredients make for some creative flavors! In fact, there are almost 40 different beers to choose from, with 13 available on tap for instant refreshment.

So, they’ve got lemongrass kölsch, cherry lime sour, jalapeño rye, raspberry honey .. need I say more? And if you really want to start your day off with a kick, pick up a glass of This Fresh Morning. It’s an Indian Pale Ale with flavors of lemon peel, honey, and pink peppercorns.

And what this best brewery in NYC lacks in food, it more than makes up for with cool branded t-shirts, sweatshirts, hats, and bags – items that are all customizable and ready to go home with you so that you can remember your visit.

12. Alewife Brewing

Alewife Brewing is one of the best breweries in NYC that is very much about art and its image.

That’s why, they’re easily one of the most artistic New York breweries on this list, showcasing a wealth of fantastic designs that are all colorful, intricate, psychedelic, in your face, and super distinct.

Fortunately for you though, they put just as much effort into their beer as they do their artwork!

Something that is reflected in the totally unique names of their beers. I mean, have you ever drunk something like Cognitive Frequency? Or, how about Death Before Dying?

Because I know I for one feel totally underprepared for life without a Maps of Reality in my hand!

But seriously, they could call them Beer 1, Beer 2, and Beer 3 and they’ll still taste just as good!

Their venue is also hella large. So, even though there is no in-house restaurant, they regularly have food trucks stop by with all kinds of delicious cuisines for you to chow down on while you sip your beer…aka burgers, tacos, hot dogs, and anything elese that pairs nicely with a tasty beverage or two!

Of course, being artists, they obviously have copious amounts of merch. Therefore, you can probably find your favorite drink proudly displayed upon a printed shirt in their store.

And trust me, these are super rad designs that were made to be worn people!

13. Evil Twin Brewing

This brewery is definitely not as sinister as it sounds. In fact, they’re downright neighborly!

See, this bad boy of the beer world started off in Denmark before eventually settling in Queens. And ever since their arrival, Evil Twin has put a special emphasis on working collaboratively with other brewers, both in NYC and throughout the world, as they try to become one of the best breweries in NYC.

Because in sharing access to their recipes, they can experiment with flavors to create the best-tasting beers possible. And I don’t know about you but that sure doesn’t sound evil to me!

In fact, they’re so open to people, that they offer on-site tours of their brewery. So, visit on any given Saturday and you can sign up to get a behind-the-scenes look at their establishment.

This way, you can see exactly how each beer is crafted and produced. You also get to sample them too, but only if you’re 21 or older of course!

So, come thirsty since they’ve got IPA, stout, English barleywine, pale ale, hard seltzer, and sour beers to choose from (we gettin’ fancy up in here).

Also, not to be out-hipsterized by anyone, but Evil Twin Brewing also makes their own onsite coffee. This way, you can proudly proclaim that you knew all about their java before it was cool!

FYI, they also have some swagerific, hipster choices in their merch department, including recycled tote bags, plaid pet leashes, novelty license plates, hot sauce, and pins (as well as t-shirts, sweatshirts, and glassware, obvs).

ICONYC started out as a wholesale business that worked out of a not-so-swank basement.

From there, they re-established themselves inside a small taproom that wasn’t too far from the playground where the three founders first met as children.

So, long story short, these more-than-a-little modest beginnings eventually resulted in them moving out to Long Island City and forming the brewery that we know and love today.

It’s here that you’ll find beers that range in flavor from Ales to IPAs, sour fruit beer to strong Porters, Kölsch to Bavarian Bock. So yes, there really is something for everyone at one of the best breweries in NYC!

Heck, they even have a super snazzy taco truck in residence that serves an array of delicious meat and vegetarian tacos. A perfect accompaniment to a nice cold glass of beer!

But, if tacos aren’t your jam, ICONYC is more than happy for you to schedule a delivery right to their taproom, or for you to bring something you made yourself,.

15. The Flagship Brewing Company

The Flagship Brewing Company recognizes Staten Island as the New York outsider. Which makes sense since people routinely refer to it as the “Forgotten Borough”.

Yeah, I hate to say it but when you picture New York, you don’t immediately think of Staten Island.

BUT, Flagship Brewing Company? Well, they know this and think this is one of the many things that makes the culture of Staten Island totally unique – something that they’ve infused into all of the beers they serve.

Because believe it or not, this is one of the best breweries in NYC that is the self-proclaimed “true taste of creativity in Staten Island”.

And while there aren’t any tours available, you could always just rent the whole place out for a private party. I mean, once you’ve got the entire place to yourself, it’s kind of like a tour? right?

Oh, there’s also no restaurant at the Flagship Brewing Company. So, you’ve got to be a true beer lover to get the most out of what they have to offer.

But, I seriously doubt that will be a problem since everyone here is super passionate about their product. So, even if you’re super new to the beer game, you’ll still get totally swept up in their enthusiasm!

So even though there’s no restaurant. Can I still get a cool souvenir? Umm…of course! Because Flagship has plenty of customizable apparel for you to enjoy, including hats, shirts, sweatshirts, and jersey tanks – perfect attire for summer in NYC.

16. Kills Boro Brewing Company

Don’t be scared by the threatening name. Because the only thing these guys want to kill is your thirst!

See, all the way over on Staten Island, Kills Boro Brewing Company is working hard to make sure that everyone has a refreshing glass of beer at their very colorful brewery.

And with beers like “DOPE!”, “Gimme That Vibe”, “Loot Box” and “Spittin’ Marble”, you know these guys are a lot of fun and are totally delivering on that goal!

Plus, with a vibrant beer garden that has the capacity to spill out into the street, you’ll enjoy a stellar party vibe that makes this one of the best breweries in NYC.

Which is probably why they got artists to paint the side of their brewery to resemble some crazy, animal party disco – a design that is all over their cans since their logo is basically a spray-painted tag too!

However, in spite of what their logo might have you believe, Kills Boro is also all about keeping it simple. So, no brewery tour, and no restaurant. Just one super cool, mouthwatering drinking experience.

And just in case you were wondering, they do have merch. Obvs! So, T-shirts, sweatshirts, and sleek glassware for drinking in style are all available for your shopping pleasure.
